Using a puller for field work?

This has been weighing on me. What if you put a highly modified puller in the field? What would its limitations, if any, be? I can think of excessive fuel consumption for one, but are there others? The few tractor pulls I ve seen featured bone stock machines (or so they said) and I really enjoyed those. Also the big Belgian teams but of course they aren t tractors. Gerrit

Often the pulling tractors with winning the 10 dollar trophy would do OK. The pro level tractors would do very poorly and expensively. Many are not capable of
operating more than a few seconds. From extreme compression ratios and massive turbo boost, they would expire. My former neighbor Merle Grimm in Bowling green
created a tractor called Sassey Massey it was powered by a 5000hp gas turbine engine using Jet-A fuel. It used about 5 gallons of fuel to get running and 10 to
make a pull. Youtube it. Jim

My Hot Stock 1466 IH puller at 700-800 horses would last about 60 seconds or

less in the field...A 15 sec run at 12.5 mph has it at 1200-1400 degrees...It only has

a 4 gallon cooling system...I change oil every 8 hooks..The picture is our MSTPA pull

announcer driving it at Holden,MO a couple of weeks ago..He had a blast.

Back in the mid 1970's I had an 856 IH puller that was also farmed with..In field trim

you could run 200 horses in cool weather or 160 horses in hot weather..On the pulling

track at 12,000 lbs it ran 350 horses with a different pump, lines,injectors-etc.

Blaine, I found the pull on Utube. I'm guessing you don't have any trouble picking your tractor out of the sea of green!

Interesting, I didn't know how extensive the mods were in some cases--or that you could run a turbine-powered tractor. I looked up the Sassy Massey, looks like he had a lot of fun with it. Crowd loved it when he blew fire out the stack! Gerrit
