John Deere 318 riding little mower.

Looking to find out what type of information I can dig up on this John Deere 318. I got into a conversation with a person who owns one and they need some work done to it. Like always I don't usually service anything newer than 1974 in tractors. This nice older person who really needs a helping hand on this one. So, before I get myself into this mess I need to find out where to get parts for it, if need a tune up I need to know the specs for them and who know what else. Just asking out here before I get myself in a big mess that I wish that I never got myself into. Never worked on a riding mower John Deere 318 that is right. Thanks for your comment.

One of the toughest and best lawn and garden tractors ever made!

Check the serial number and you can find out what year it is at the link below.

Most/many parts are still available through your local DEERE dealer, you can look up parts at the link below.

Earlier units had breaker points, later units had EI.

Check engine model number, as an older unit MAY have had a later engine installed.

If the owner does not have an Operator's Manual (which would have tuneup, service and lube info) you can download a copy for FREE at the DEERE bookstore.

It takes a little figuring out, but the Operator's Manual can be downloaded for FREE or purchased in hard copy. The Technical Manual or printed Parts catalog are NOT free.

I needed an Idler pulley,
JD dealer wanted $30 for a 3 inch plastic pulley.
Got a steel pulley from Amazon for $11.
I would check out Amazon's prices vs JD dealer..
Best part, if the part doesn't fit, Amazon pays return shipping..

I have a 318 and some of JD's prices are competitive and some aren't. Several years ago I wanted new spark plug wires for mine - needs 2 wires. Dealer wanted $50 for them. Got them for less than $5 at NAPA. Some stuff you can get from ebay. I bought a new switch for mine last year off bay. Don't remember the price but works OK. Mine is a 1989 model with a lot of hours and has had very few problems over its life time. They are a very good model garden tractor.

Our family has four late model John Deere 318's. They are a real solid tractor and a real workhorse. Parts prices and availability are kinda all over the board. Just had to put a front PTO clutch on mine and found lots on Amazon and it was a good fit and working well.

Run away quickly if you are trying to help and the engine needs a new starter.......engine has to come out !! Good luck

As soon as I hear the word Onan I run. The K series Kohler engines are the best small engines every produced in my opinion and are among the cheapest to maintain and rebuild. If you have a dead Onan B or P series that needs rebuilt the parts are more than a quality parts kit for a small block Chevy.

If it runs bad be sure to check the intake manifold. They are two piece and known to separate. Good tractors.
