Tractor Canopy suggestions

I saw your photos of Olivers with cloth canopies. I would like a sun shade on my old Massey Ferguson 50. But I had an umbrella on it that was
torn off by the wind years ago, even when the tractor was parked in an open shed. Do the folding canopies hold up better in the wind? Would
I need to take it off when parked, or for winter storage? I would appreciate your preferences, experiences, brands and recommendations. Thank
you

I used a 3 bow canopy on my 3020 for years. Never had any problem with wind damaging it. I would put it on in the spring and take it off in the fall. Mine had two set screws to loosen and remove the whole assembly and would hang it on the wall in my shop. Usually got about three years out of the fabric, then just buy the fabric replacement.

The square umbrellas don't seem to handle wind very well. I have a canopy on my Farmall M and I use it for tractor rides and it handles the wind fairly well. I wouldn't leave it up stored outside or in a shed where wind could get to it. You can collapse the canopy in a matter of minutes for storage.

I have one tractor with a 3 bow cloth canopy that is well over 20 years old. I always store the tractor inside when no in use.

This canopy on my 1030 Case is over 15 years old now, and has no trouble withstanding wind, and travelling at road speed. These things are easy to install and easy to remove. Should work very well on a MF 50. There are several different types of mounting brackets, most mount on fenders, but I have seen brackets designed for mounting on axles on old style narrow front tractors that had no fenders too.

Hay, It has been a while since I have seen a store bought canopy and I am sure that they are made pretty universal to mount on many fenders. I am sure your massey fenders would be good to mount one on. The one I have on my old style 88 is a homade one. I will add a couple pictures if I can. I just used some 1/4 by 1 1/2 steel strap and some 1/2 round bar. Then I got three 10 foot lenghts of heavy EMT conduit and used my pipe bender to make the bows. I had a friend that does upolstery sew up the canvas. The next one I make I will have him make the canvas bigger and spread the bows farther apart. Seems that all my Ideas get out of hand. So while I was at it I added lights to the mounting bracket. It is made out of 2 x 1/4 flat strap. The bows pivot on a 1/2 inch bolt and the wrench stays in the tool box under the seat. It would take a pretty good wind to do any damage to this one.

Does it have to be a soft canopy? I d bet you could find a metal one such as the one pictured and modify it to fit your needs. Durable and you can even mount lights up high. Probably some in tractor salvage yards.

(quoted from post at 18:50:22 09/15/22) If you leave a tractor with a canopy outside fold the three or five bows together and tie them when you dont need shade. Tony

And take it off and put inside where mice will not make a home for the winter inside the folds.

You would have to come up with the supports, but uv resistant polyplastic golf cart canopies can be had for free from a customizer shop.

I built this all steel canopy for our JD 4600, I had the pipe and square tubing, and a local steel shop cut and bent the 11 ga. for the top, I think I got it all done for about $125. the ROPS was already on the tractor, and the canopy can be used without the front supports if I ever took the loader off, but I never do. Before I built the canopy, about 5 years ago I was mowing trails in the woods and I snagged a dead tree, and part of it came down and hit me in the head, that's when I decided to build it. I should of done it 21 years ago when the tractor was new!

Go to amazon.com and type in 'bimini top' there will be dozens of sizes, colors and materials. Get the measurements you want, and order it up. Also get the storage bag and roll it up in the bag when not in use.

I'm put several on and they work fine. Made to go on a boat that runs 35-50MPH.

Yes, we take ours off of the Oliver's, and put in the shed, they go in their holders on fender brackets. One set screw on each side,
I will try to get some pics for you.

Zoom in the pic, behind Bailey putting oil in the 660, you will see the fender mounts, these came with box canopy set.
