Allis chalmers d17 series one clanking noise in the rear

Hello! I just bought my first tractor and it is an allis d17, and first thing I noticed is there is a clanking noise that sounds like it is it is in the rear end but also I kind of thought it could be a broke crank in the engine but you can hear the noise better in the rear end. My question is has anyone ever had this noise and does anyone know what it is and what the fix is? I would really like to get this fixed so that I can work it a little in the fall.

Another problem is that the power director does not have a neutral but the high and low works fine. Is there an adjustment on it that can be done or is it just wore out?

Thanks for reading this and I hope you can help!

For starters you may want to change the oil in the rear end, and look for metal, same as for the motor. Crank shafts do break, but I would suspect
something else. Stan

Thank you for responding the oil looks good from the dipstick but I was figuring on changing all the oils soon. Thanks for the advice!

Also, the dipstick was originally hitting something which I suspect was the crank so I bent it back and it is not hitting anymore

The clanking noise can be diagnosed more easily if we know the following: Does it occur when the tractor is not moving? Does it occur when
the clutch is let out, in neutral? Does it occur when the clutch is pushed in while in gear? Does it occur when the PTO is turned on? Does
it occur when coasting while driving slightly down hill? Does it occur at engine speed repetition? Does it occur at tire rotation speed?

It makes that sound all the time no matter going up or down a hill, clutch pushed in or out, and it speeds up and down with the motor. The two speed does not change the speed of the sound no matter high or low.

Then it is in the engine, from the flywheel forward. broken cranks are possible, as ar rod bearings and valve train component failure. If the front pulley can be turned
(even a fraction of a degree) without the flywheel moving, suspect the crank, or keyways in the pulley. Jim

Ok that s kinda what I figured since even if the clutch is engaged it s still make that sound. Could the flywheel possible be loose? I mean either way you have to split the tractor. Also, do you know where I could find a crank for a gas d17 series 1 because I looked online and I can t find one. Thank you so much for helping me narrow this problem down! -Ryan

Look for simple things. Those power spread wheels sometimes make a knocking sound when the tractor is being driven. Also loose wheel weights can make a funny sound. Take fan belt off and check water pump

It can t be the wheels making that sound because you can hear it even when the tractor is stopped. The water pump is possible but the tractor has low oil pressure and some blow by so I was also thinking it could be a ring on the pistons broke and the piston hitting a piece of the ring. I ll have to try taking the fan belt off but I m pretty sure the motor is going to need torn down and basically all rebuilt because of the blow by and the knocking.
