I have a JD 520. When the left brake is applied, a popping noise comes from the inside. If it is like a 50, the brake pinion runs on the bull gear. I suspect the pinion shaft has problems... anyone ever experienced this?

That is what I am thinking. When the tractor is running, the rear end is quite and there is no vibration or noise. It is only when the brake is applied. I bought this machine a couple of months back and haven't had time to tear into it. The starter began giving trouble and I took it out to find the nose cone broken in half. About the only way to accomplish that is to get it out of time and have it back fire. I then found fresh paint on the flywheel marks. My guess is someone got the timing off or the distributor set wrong. The ring gear has a hefty chunk out of it too. The brake drum was cracked and welded back. I took the drum and had it turned true. I am going to pull the brake assembly first of the week.
