As the manual says, for 'internal grease and dirt'. As in following oil contamination or a neglected system.

Laundry detergent would do little for calcium deposits. But along the same lines, any acidic flush strong enough to dissolve the calcium could reveal some leaks. A truly calcium clogged radiator will need to be rodded or recored.

I've always just used plain water, the drain plugs open, overflowing while it runs with a heater hose removed or the thermostat removed. That will get the free floating rust out, but usually by that point there is an abundant supply in the lower regions of the block.

Remember that washing soda is NOT the same as baking soda. I use washing soda to electrically clean up rusty parts and I get it at the swimming pool chemical store.

It is not laundry detergent either.
But it is a water softener thus making any detergent more effective.

(quoted from post at 15:22:10 09/09/22) Is not Borax Laundry Soda?

I thought so too, but evidently a different mineral.

From the web:
Washing soda (sodium carbonate) has a very high pH level, making it an extreme alkaline compound that is very effective as a cleaning agent. Borax (sodium tetraborate) pH levels aren't as high as washing soda, and it doesn't have the same cleaning power as washing soda.

i have to flush my w9 also. i am using household vinegar. off to costco to get 11 gallons of vinegar and then a couple cases of antifreeze
