ID this John Deere part

I posted this before(or thought I did), but now I can't find my post.

Does anybody have any information on this cast spud in the steering wheel. I'm told it is to crank with. It has B2554R on it.

So since it the number begins with B I assume that means it was for a B? How does one determine if it works on others? Does anybody happen to have a picture or a link of this in the parts catalog?
 
As I remember the A and B numbering systems from the days 43 years ago working in engineering, those letters indicated which part of the company had design control of the part.

How else would you start those tractors with the covered flywheel when the electric starter wouldn't work? Other than pulling them?
You went to the tool box, got a screw driver and pryed off the round sheet metal, spring-held cover, then used the wrench you always carried, un-bolted the steering wheel, took the steering wheel off by wiggiling and pulling, shoved that little casting into the steering wheel hub, finger tightening the nut onto it (so you wouldn't loose that nut, engage the hole with the cross pin in the flywheel just inside the cover and said a prayer or a cuss-word and stuggled to turn the steering wheel. I don.t recall those later model having a pepcock to release cylinder pressure, so the struggle would have been a good one if the tractor wasn't a easy starter!

I remember starting a 36A buried under a 225 two row mounted picker that all but covered the open flywheel. It was not short little stud like the picture, though, but with a longer rod. One would never try that without crawling around under the rig to open or close the petcocks!
 
I have one of those similar to the one pictured. It came with my John Deere H. My little H has electric start on it. Way the fly wheel has a ring gear on it & shroud around it there's no way you are able to hand crank it. without the stub & steering wheel. Although I never tried it real tight quarters but I guess it's better than nothing. Dave F.
 
We had a late model A that had the petcocks on it,the 70 had plugs but no valves.

Many folks just got a second steering wheel and left the crank apparatus permanently mounted on it. My Dad had one for his '46 A. It just hung on the air cleaner stack most of the time, so it was handy when it was needed.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]CRANKSHAFT OIL SLINGER, FLYWHEEL, AND ASSOCIATED PARTS[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below on page 20.

Note the Shaft, Cranking, with Key (Key 19).

Also note that this part was designed for early 1947 tractors serial number B201000 and up.

Note the [i:654c4848f0]stub shaft with cross pin[/i:654c4848f0], which [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]wore out[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0] refers to as an adapter, is also called the [i:654c4848f0]Shaft, Cranking, with Key[/i:654c4848f0] (Key 19) in the Model B parts manual on page 20.

As the operator's manual states, [i:654c4848f0]remove the tractor steering wheel[/i:654c4848f0].

The next step is [i:654c4848f0]insert the stub shaft with cross pin[/i:654c4848f0].

Align the cross pin (key way) with the slot in the steering wheel and slide it in.

This brings me to another related question. I'm told this particular part is for the later tractors('47-up). What would the correct starting spud look like for my electric start '46 A?

Obviously the small one, [b:654c4848f0]AB 3580 R[/b:654c4848f0], also is designed for the Model B.

It would look like this. I use this one on my '41 B. It will also work on an open flywheel A like your '46.
This one is permanently welded to a separate steering wheel.

Did they ever make a wheel/crank combo that was intended solely to turn the tractor over? I ask because I'm sure I have a wheel with a cranking spud like that around here somewhere except that the wheel is a big 4 bar(slightly larger diameter than a manual steering 70) and the rim of the wheel is steel tube instead of rubber coated rod like the steering wheel.
