My Oliver 88 will show discharge at very slow idle, but when throttle is advanced it will charge at 10.Why does it show discharge at slow speeds?? Thanks,Chris

Normal operating Generator.

That's why everything went to Alternator, Gen. systems don't charge at Idle.

If the cut-out relay doesnt open before the rpm gets that low, the generator is trying to turn the engine like a motor.

My AC D15II does the same thing. You can watch and see when the cut out side of the regulator opens as the ammeter goes back to the middle. I watch the ammeter on shut down to make sure it goes back to zero. A friend nearly lost his tractor when his VR/cut out didn't open on shut down.

Well you have a few amps draw from the ignition system as it is running this would cause a discharge to be possible if it does not turn fast enough. A couple things to cure that one would be, to change the sizes of pulleys on the engine or generator to spin faster, just run it a bit 't faster so it doesn't discharge, or change to an alternator.

In years of old tractor use and buying and selling when a used dealer I SAW THAT OFTEN doesnt sound necessarily real bad to me. At slow RPM SUBJECT TO LOADS there can be more current being drawn OUT of the battery than the genny can supply back IN. A coil ignition might draw around 4 amps which the genny needs to replace remember, and at low RPM it just may not if alllllllllllll isn't up to par !!!!!!!!!

Things that may or may not help are: Tighter Belt,,,,,,,Increase idle RPM,,,,,,,,Clean up commutator and insure brushes are long enough,,,,,,,insure brush hold down springys are working properly...

Unless it becomes a problem IM NOT A FAN of a rookie getting into the VR and trying (especially if not all the equipment or experience) to adjust it, but hey whatever works for you go for it

(quoted from post at 06:42:15 08/26/22) My Oliver 88 will show discharge at very slow idle.

Don't muck with the cutout spring tension or gap unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing and have the correct cut in and out voltage ''specs'' at hand.

If the cutout points don't open when generator output drops below battery voltage at idle they aren't going to open at shutdown, resulting in the $moke being let out of the generator and a dead battery.

..and if I may add, that 2-3 amp discharge is not battery discharging back thru VR cut-out and generator....it would be very much higher amperage. Looks like ign current to me, with cut out open, as it should be at slow idle speed..

Totally normal. A higher idle may help some, but why bother?

You are not having any problems,

Guido.

its a normal situation on any 6 volt tractor. the generator is not going to produce with 400 engine rpm.
