A local sale here has a 9710 White and a 5250 CIH. Tractor data shows both engines are about the same meaning they are the same displacement. Yet one says a B5t Cummins and the other is a CDC engine. So are they the same engines or different. I know Cummins and CIH did a joint venture engine plant for the CIH tractors. Just didn't know if they used those engines, or sold them to other manufacturers for their use. My brother seems to think they are the same engine. I am doubting that.

Are you sure about the 9710? Does not show up on Tractordata when I looked. The White 8710 has the Cummins 8.3 engine, and the 5250 has the smaller 5.9 engine.

CDC means consolidated diesel company aka case Cummins engine, made in Rocky Mount NC. The industrial motors were made in NC and the dodge and some on road versions of the B are made here in Southern IN.

Yup just looked again and it says a B5.9t 6710 White. Yes the 8710 has the 8.3 and is about twice the HP of the 6710 at 105 HP. SO you guys are saying the 2 engines are not the same engine. Just was looking and my brother was saying they were he thought. Being they both are 359 CI and have almost identical bores and stokes. Close enough depending on whether you rounded the 3rd decimal behind the period or not would, or could be the same. So you're saying they are not the same engines in them. Just wondered since I never thought that much of a Cummins and not sure I'm all that whippie on the CDC engine, Thought the one in the 7140 does start good in the cold when using on grain cart or chisel plowing. Don't care much for the jerk amatic transmission in it though compared to the Deere powershift in similar tractors like the 4850 or 4955.

Dyslexia sucks with old age. I meant to say the 6710 and put 9710 my fault on that. But yes I meant the 6710 and the 5250 which are close to the same size tractors HP wise. Sorry about the confusion.

The 8.3 engines are basically the same, with minor differences. I imagine the 5.9 followed suit. When the CDC 8.3 (Case/Cummins) in my CaseIH combine blew up, we found a Cummins out of a garbage truck to replace it. The front housing where the injection pump mounts was different. So we switched the whole front from one engine to the other without any problem. The valve cover is a little different as I had to go to CaseIH to get the proper gasket.
The 5.9 in my CIH 5230 is naturally aspirated. The 5240 and 5250 I believe are turbocharged. That probably included things like after cooling, oil cooling, piston cooling, etc.

Consolidated Diesel Corporation was a joint venture between Cummins and Case in the 1980's through 2008 at which point Cummins bought Case's half and it became fully Cummins. The JV was initially created to design and build engines for Case ag and construction equipment. The B- and C-series engines could be branded Cummins, Case, or CDC depending on the buyer but the name plate was the only difference.

For all intents and purposes they are the same engine.

Same as the one they put in the Dodge trucks too up until the early 2000's.

The 5.9L is known as the 6BT, meaning 6 cylinder B series turbo. An 8.3L would be a 6CT, but they usually call them 8.3's. Hardly ever hear them say "6CT" but then again the 5.9's are hot commodities in pickup trucks, while the 8.3's are way too large and heavy.

The 5.9 Cummins and 5.9 CDC are the same engine, don't know why Tractor Data shows the .004 smaller bore for the Cummins when all other sources show the 5.9 Cummins with the same 4.020 bore as the CDC engine
The 5.9 Cummins/CDC was a very adaptable engine in its design, changing out the timing gear case allowed the use of a number of different brands and styles of injection pumps, that along with numerous other inner changeable components made it one of the most widely used engines on the market.

Swapping out a few external components on a 5.9 used in a rear pusher shuttle bus allowed me to adapt that engine to fit in my F-450

I'm not saying it's the best engine for its size but that it was probably the most adaptable engine on the market and was used in a large number of applications

Try this Consolidated Diesel Company (CDC) was a diesel engine manufacturer that was founded in 1980 as a 50/50 joint venture between Case Corp, (now CNH Global) and Cummins. It produced Cummins B series, C series and ISL Series engines and engine products for automotive and industrial markets in North America and Europe. In 2008, Cummins purchased Fiat's 50% share (CNH Global) in CDC, and it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cummins.
