Looking for a used main tractor

Well Im in the market for a good used tractor. Primary duties would be pulling a 10 shank allis chalmers chisel, 16 field cultivator, and a 15 CIH cultimulcher drill. What size do you think I could get by with? Do you think a John Deere 4240 or 4230 would be big enough? I have roughly $20,000 to spend. Open to all brands or suggestions.

Those jd,s would be big enough but I don't think you will find good ones for your budget. Maybe a 135 or 150 White. They were reliable old tractors.

Depending on where you are located will determine what the selling price might be. A Case 2290 or 2390 may be in your price range. They sell for less than 20k in my area, and are good machines too.

I agree about the 90 series Case tractors. Very reliable machines for horsepower and costs compared to other tractors of this range. And a lot less cost too. Good luck with your search. Kow Farmer Kurt

Lot of Oliver/White, Ford, Case, and IHC machines would be dependable and in your budget, but Im sure you will go green. Nothing wrong with that but might hurt your budget to get there.

What dealers are still in your area and which used tractors are common in your area? Getting parts from a long distance and getting service on a tractor that was never sold in your area can be difficult, time consuming, and expensive even if the initial cost of the tractor is much lower.

Relative to the other brands the Case tractors are often a superior dollar value. Somehow after Case bought IH out the prior Case tractors declined in value.

I wouldn't go with a 2-150, They had that 585 Moline engine. The 2-155 was the turned up 135. They were a good tractor. A 2-105 or 2-110 would be comparable to the Deeres that are mentioned. I'd highly recommend any of the four.

My neighbor has many antique case tractors.
He was complaining he couldn't get parts to fix the leaking power steering ..

AS mentioned above, dealer support is #1.

We have John Deere, Case IH, Agco, and new Holland. Plus a independent guy who stocks parts for all older brands.

4240 should cover your needs. In today's market you may not find a cab (SGB) equipped tractor for the money you are talking. I don't understand all the hubbub about distance to dealer as JD around here is the most proximate in terms of distance and most likely will be in most of the US and Canada. 90 series Case although good when new would worry me as to parts and service today. Most dealer shops do not want to tackle older tractors and that is true around here as well. The Mennonites around here have everything covered which has any following but nothing for JI Case.

ALL the tractors mentioned here are ANTIQUE.

Half the brands mentioned don't even exist anymore.

Manufacturers are gradually dropping parts support for most old tractors as parts supplies run out. Mechanics who knew how to work on them are in their 70's and 80's, long retired.

If you want parts and dealer support, then don't buy anything more than 20 years old. Of course anything big enough to handle the equipment mentioned above will be well over $20,000.

This too. If your Case 90 series powershift goes South, better have deep pockets or be prepared to park the tractor, and FORGET having the local CaseIH dealership work on it. Same with your 4320/4520 at the Deere dealership.

I'll modify what I said about Case as John Saeli is not far away and does parts on Case. Never been to his place and should do so some time. Having said that I still think JD is better supported on average in terms of new and used parts along with shops that work on them.

I used to pull an 11' mounted chisel plow with a JD 4430 that didn't have the injector pump turned up. Once I got the load/depth sensor set right it'd go 5.5mph, pulling fairly deep, hardly slip. The newest 4430's are 45 years old so finding a good one might take some doing, especially under $20,000

For the tractors within your size and needs and budget, dealer support DOES NOT come into the picture. You will have to go with a combination of self reliance and also a local independent shop or road service mechanic. While a dealer may talk a good game about support of the older tractors, in reality they do not have the resources available. We all know that they cannot hire mechanics and that they do not stock parts. If your "old" tractor goes to a dealer it will languish out back while they work on getting you to sign for a late model unit.
