Bush hog blade nut size.

I need to know the nut size of a bush hog blade bolt so I can get a socket to have on hand when the time comes. I've looked all over the net but apparently it is a closely guarded state secret. The bush hog is SQ 720. A six-foot two blade mower. Thanks for any help. TDF

My sq72 is 1&11/16. Go figure. If this is the first time you've pulled the blades you may want to consider this. The bolt is keyed. I got a new bolt and nut, threaded it 2 threads and welded it. I pull the blade nut, screw this on, and the mushroom sits above the deck so I can use a 9 lb sledge to ease it out.

My King Kutter has a 1-11/16 nut, spot welded to the bolt. I'm using the blue flame wrench to deal with the weld. Next comes the socket.

(quoted from post at 06:59:49 08/22/22) It's a bit difficult to measure across the flats when it is down in a hole.

Know someone with a 3/4 drive set? Borrow it and try the different sockets mentioned, then buy the one that fits. 1-11/16 is a common size.

We just put new blades on our 6 foot BH, they were 1- 11/16, that seems to be a common size. On ours, from underneath you could use an open end wrench, or measure it with a caliper.

My older 8' took a 1 5/8 socket, my newer one (2016) is 42mm. Your best bet would be to buy a 3/4" drive socket set because you will need that size of breaker bar to get to 800 ft/lb of torque. You will also need an extension to reach thru the deck. I use a ten foot cheater pipe on my breaker bar and guess at 80 lbs of pull on the end. It bends the bar pretty good, 1/2" drive will not do it. I unthread the nut just enough that I have a pilot for an old disc shaft to fit in the nut then use a steel post driver to drive the bolt down...then take the nut off and use a punch and hammer to drive the bolt the rest of the way out. I then wire brush the bolt so it will go back together a bit easier...
