920 cat loader with weak tranny

I found one for sale with a fresh engine and nervous tranny. still drives! need a loader on the farm and wondered if anyone has experience with this situation. he will allow me to have it serviced before buying! Nebraska

I can only imagine that overhaul of a CAT transmission would be pretty salty.

We have a 916 at work. We were told if trans goes, it's cost prohibitive to fix.

Tell the seller that you are truly interested, but that you need a one week's trial. Then test it under your hardest conditions. If he doesn't believe that it will pass he won't let you take it.

I'm sure the price of the engine overhaul has a lot to do with how the machine is priced. $6000. I think i'm going to offer to pay to have the tranny serviced and see what's found and have an oil test done!

you might want to change the tranny filter,screen and fluid--Cats new TO4 transmission oil has friction modifiers that do wonders in a transmission

more info today; i called a cat guy and he recommended warming it up and removing the filters and taking an oil sample. also to look at the magnet on the drain plug. he said sound more like a torque converter problem but the problem is you have to remove the engine to replace.
