Suitable Hytran substitute ?

We had gotten low on Hytran and Corn Head grease. I told dad when he got a moment today to run by the JD store to get the grease then go by IH dealer and get another batch of Hytran. Instead he got everything from the JD dealer which he said was considerably cheaper. Is the JD Hy-Guard suitable for use in CIH 71xx,574,674,and 2344 series tractors and combine ? It says on the label it meets or exceeds the J20C specifications.

I'd use it in them all. I would not worry about power shift transmissions with that like I would the cheap stuff from the farm stores.

Right or wrong I use the premium universal tractor oil from Tractor Supply. There are 2 stores less than 10 miles from us, and the nearest IH dealer is over an hour away. A John Deere dealer is fairly close, and they specialize in smaller tractors and mowers, and I guess Hygard could be found there.

I use Chevron 1000 htf in the Farmall 560 . Pick it up local . Works really well, way better than Coastal htf I tried .
Im not driving 200 miles round trip to an Ih store plus oil and time .

Jim we have been using the Travellers like in your picture in things like the automatic primers, tobacco baler, and other self contained systems that had a bunch of motors or cylinders. It got to the point that none of the surrounding stores would keep it in stock. I'm trying to simplify things now if it will work and limit so many different types of fluids, especially if it's as good and cheaper.

i dont think the oil will know its going into a red tractor. just though what an instructor once said in class. any oil is better than no oil meaning in an emergency only, and meaning if u have only a pail of used oil also. i did say emergency

I use JD Hy-guard in our 4600, it's what's recommended for cold weather, and it gets cold at our tree farm. I bought some Mobil hydraulic oil last year because it was inexpensive, I will probably only use it in the front axle of the 4600 and the hydraulic system on the Farmall C, it's not low-vis.

No real case person with real knowledge of case transmissions will tell you to use anything but hytran in a case powershift transmission. The difference in cost is not much compared to a transmission rebuild. Take the jd oil back and get real hytran. The case transmission will last as long and be more durable than most if the right oil is used, but the most common cause of failure is the wrong oil. Case hytran is also designed to mix with other oils so if you have other brand tractors the mixing of oils from changing equipment won't bother it. Now if it's a non-powershift model then cheaper oil is ok.

Hyguard if fine for red tractors but not case tractors as they are very different with different needs. Hygard is good oil, just not for case tractors with powershift.

Try it and let us know how it works out for you.

The honest answer is, nobody really knows. Nobody has done a scientific experiment where they took 1000 identical tractors, put Hytran in 500 of them and Hygard in 500 of them, and ran them in identical conditions for identical hours to see what happens, which ones wear more, which ones broke down more, etc..

You PROBABLY won't have any problems. Probably, but you will never know 100% for sure.

BTW, unless the CaseIH dealer is also a Viscosity Oil dealer, they will not have "real" Hytran. They will have the new Shell formula which does the same thing but kind of smells like a dead animal.

Seek out a Viscosity dealer for the "Ultraction" product which is "real" Hytran and smells like Hytran.
