How are the steel panels on steel livestock and horse trailer attached? They appear to be spot welded every six inches or so and to have some sort of putty adhering the non welded space. Is this accurate? What is the adhesive or caulk they use?

Something similar to the seam sealer in your pickup truck bed.
 
RV lap sealant is not at all the same thing. Its just a soft flexible and usually self leveling caulking.
