Fergie t20 head

Hi, I have a tea20, I ve got to do some work on the engine & in stripping the head off I noticed it s got 5 copper head gaskets stacked up on it. I ve not seen that before & can t think of any good reason it would be a good practice. Amazingly it didn t leak. Any ideas?

I hear heads can be different thicknesses. Do you have head dimensions & corresponding pushrod lengths. I m concerned it could have a short head & long pushrods

The cylinder head may have been surface ground more than once to a correct warped condition and needed the additionl gaskets for clearance to keep the valves from hitting the pistons.

The Feguson TEA20 tractor had a petrol engine only and a lot of farmers here in the UK wanted to
run them on TVO like the rest of their tractors. To get over the problem Ferguson offerd a
convertion to lower the compression of the engine witch consisted of a steel spacer plate and two
head gaskets. The convertion also had a small petrol tank for starting witch mounted at the side
of the battery. MJ.

Ah, interesting. Mine could be a tvo then, it has the 2 cap tank and switched fuel tap.

Any way I can tell for sure & should I just put the 5 head gaskets beck on when I re assemble?
I only had to take it off to put in a new end core plug.

I would sure have the head checked for flat!

Running it torqued down on a stack of gaskets would have the potential to warp it or even crack it!

I m trying to get some specs for the head & pushrods so I can see if it s within the realms of keeping this head or searching for a replacement.

I have no idea how thick the head is supposed to be.

My pushrods are 690mm and my head measures 85mm.

It does look like it s been skimmed before ad the lower edge of the casting is much thinner than the top.

No one out there know the different head thickness and pushrod lengths on the Ferguson petrol engines???

Update on mine. I put the head back on with a single gasket instead of the 5 it previously had. And unsurprisingly the pushrods won t install. Before I can get the tappet rail all the way down I m locked out on the pushrods and still 2/8th of sn inch off being home.

I ve heard there are 2 lengths of pushrods for the 2 different heads. I m just trying to find those lengths.
