Farmall 400 md?

Warhead13

New to this forum. Not sure if Im posting in correct location. I bought an old gas start diesel farmall I belive its a 400 it does have wide front. But my question I got it home I was able to get it started but water started coming out of exhaust ports into the manifold. Could this be cracked head ? Bad head gasket?

Could be, yes. Could also be rain water down the exhaust, if this was a first time start up since you entered into the story.

Rule out rain water, and then you'll know. Bad gasket or its cracked someplace.

I'll add that if it has coolant and the droplets were water, that is good. If it was coolant it could be a cracked head. Was there a statement that it ran OK or was it as is where is. Cracks are moderately common when they are worked hard then just shut off without 5 minutes of cool down at Idle (on diesel). A similar warmup is needed before dropping the plow. They are great thrifty tractors, I owned an MD and was happy to get 2000 for it in 98. It had bad tires but ran well and had a 3pt hitch. Good luck. Jim

I've read that almost all of the heads on those gas start diesels are cracked when taken to a machine shop. Most can be repaired. As previous poster said, you need 5 minutes warm up and cool down to help prevent this. I've never owned one but I'm sure over the years this doesn't always happen. Especially if you run out of fuel or have other maintenance problems.

Being it's new to you, I would run it a while, drive it around, put a load on it if possible. Watch the temperature and coolant level, check out the rest of the functions, listen, feel, observe, make a list of everything you find.

Get an idea what all it will take to get it where you want it. If it has to come apart, better to do everything at once that take it apart again!

By then you will have a better idea of the water out the exhaust. If it continues even when warmed up, mystery coolant loss (but don't overfill it, keep the level just above the core openings), misfire, coolant in the oil, blowing coolant out the radiator, then there is a problem.

You can also run a combustion gas detector test, a chemical that changes color when it detects combustion gasses in the radiator.

Since it seems you do not even know exactly what you are working on ..for others see attached post.. you should send me an email through the forum. I can then direct you to some literature that will be helpful for you to get this machine back together, working and adjusted properly. Best of luck!
