IH 66 series cabs

The discussion below led me to look for videos of some older model tractors with cabs..IH were workhorses, but this is loud...https://youtu.be/Nl7Sq_dC9Gc

My cousin has a 1066 hydro. Cabs were not IH's strong suit. IH's saving grace was their engines. If it wasn't for that I don't know how they would have sold one 66 series compared to a JD 30 series. Or put is this way. The ultimate tractor would have been an IH from the bell housing forward married to a JD from there
back to the the drawbar.

I have a 966 with a cab. I never consider running it
without ear plugs. Only time I enjoyed the cab was
when chopping corn, spreading manure or ploughing
late in the fall, because it was warmer than being on a
open tractor.

GreenEnvy, I am an IH guy but I really do not think the Deere engines are that bad. A 30 series Deere which is from the same time frame as the IH 66s still demands a pretty good price in comparison. I do not think this would be if the engines were thought to be ready to grenade at any moment. The real problems with IH tractors of that era were 1.. the dry brakes, 2.. an antiquated shift method in the transmission that clashed tooth to tooth to engage rather then gears that were constantly meshed and shift collars engaged to select a gear, bull gear final drives where one gear tooth was carrying the entire load compared to a planetary final which splits the load simultaneously between three, 4.. a subpar open center hydraulic system. For being an IH guy I am sure good at fault finding.

I dont think the 30 series are bad. Its a well known fact the 404 used in the 30 series was at its limits and lacked mid range torque. And JD knew that which is why the 40 series went to the 466. I like IH tractors up through the 56 series. I have the 7th 1256 international made. Starting with the 66 series I couldnt care less about IH because they were always a series or generation behind JD with old tech like you stated.

The IH tractors after the 06 series started falling behind fast with a lack of closed center hydraulics for other than pulling tillage equipment was needed like for the pickle harvesters and in other specialty crops like vegetables and sugar beets they needed the closed center for running hydraulic motors and more pressure with more GPM in the pump. Those puny 12 GPM pumps just didn't get it by the late 70's early mid 80's for sure. As more devices were going to the higher pressures and more GPM required to run them and more things on a machines needing hydraulics they needed to have gone to more like the 20-30 GPM or more. Now if you don't have about 3500 PSI and 30 GPM you can't work half the equipment in the field now.
