Massey Still Earning her Keep

A recent storm left this "widow-maker" hung up high in the tree. Massey and a 20-foot chain persuaded it to come down to earth. Yes, it made a great crashing noise and a satisfying thud when it came to rest. Great tractor, only five years older than me. Gerrit

Is that a beech? Very common with them. They get to a certain size and the trunks get hollow. I had a summer job in the Cleveland metro parks in
'68 and there were lots of large beech leaning more and more till they went down. My barn timbers are beech, some of them are 45 feet long.

It's an odd tree for my place, not sure what it is. I had a friend look at it once and she told me and then I forgot. About a year ago it died about halfway up. The remaining 20 feet or so is completely dead. Bottom part is ok. I don't know if it got hit by lightning or what happened. Was completely healthy up til then. Forty-five foot barn timbers, that was a huge tree. This one will provide some heat this winter or the next. Gerrit
