What do I need to do to paint acrylic paint over cabinets that have been painted with lacquer? Everything was going along just fine until my wife
decided to refresh our bathroom. The problem is, it was just fine. I would rather change both rear tires on my MF instead of what I am doing.
Thanks, Stan

I would prep and scuff sand them with 180, then 2 coats Killz water base primer, fine sand, another coat if it sands through, sand again.

Then paint, either spray or use a high grade brush, 2 coats minimum.

Have fun! My guest bath needs the same, been putting it off for 3 years now!

You should be able to paint acrylic enamel over any lacquer product no problem.
It is painting lacquer over alkyd or acrylic enamel you can have difficulties,.

Acrylic paint won't adhere to lacquer. You would have to roughen the lacquer with 180 grit sandpaper and put an oil based primer on it such as Kilz original. Then you could paint it with acrylic paint.

I think you would have better luck with an oil based paint. It would wear better and withstand the moisture better.

Sand with 220 grit, wipe down with damp cloth, let dry....then apply Killz water base primer, paint 2 coats of topcoat and yer done.
