Another person was killed when his tractor rolled over him while mowing road ditches.

maybe they should get the earphones off and pay attention to the job at hand that is all it is. there is no reason for such accidents. plus mow at a 45 degree angle and dont mow where your not comfortable .

Had an Amish farmer with a cart full of kids and his daughter go off the side of the road last week. Steep roadway, steel wheels on a MF65. He's in the hospital, the daughter is dead, three kids died and four are in serious condition of the 11 kids on the trailer. What a tragedy...

The bank gave way and the tractor rolled into a ditch. No mention of the tractor being on a hill--the area seems to be nearly flat. For all we know the man had mowed the area 100's of times in the past and was comfortable with the area.

As for the earphones, do you mean the man on the tractor or the Amish in the wagon?

well post the actual happening then with all info!!! dont know how a bank can give way? then should not have been there for sure.

I don't know what you all are reading, but apparently it's something different. This accident happened last Friday near Airville, Pa. The road is fairly steep and full of curves, with some pretty nasty dropoffs on one side. Speculation is that the farmer may have hit the brakes to slow the tractor down and hit the left bake which swerved the machine to the left and over the bank. It was also equipped with steel wheels, which don't do good on asphalt. One more of the kids has passed, also...

Plenty of ways a bank could have given way and collapsed.I was mowing in a field about 50 ft out from a stream the ground under the tractor collapsed, fortunately the 3pt mower held up the rear of the tractor.

We don't think just how dangerous tractors are.
I have a roll cage on 2 tractors and a cab on another.
I have to remind myself to buckle up. I flipped a tractor when I was a kid and came very close to flipping a terramite. It flipped me off the seat faster than I could think what happened.

Tractors are death machines..

Sad people get killed while using tractors..

Two different accidents. I read the article that was in the link of the original post. The tractor accident (not the Amish wagon) was near Westside, Iowa. The area is rural and is very flat. This is the accident where the bank gave way under a JD 4020. I haven't read the article about the Amish wagon accident. Please post a link if you have one.

From what I could tell on the news video broadcast, the tractor has steel rears and rubber fronts. The road looked flat there but curved, with a ravine to the side. Just like all the roads around here. Yes, that road has very steep hills going down to the river, so who knows how fast they may have been going down one. Years ago I took my kids on a tractor ride with the TO20. I was standing on the brake while pulling up against the steering wheel, in 2nd gear, going down a steep hill toward Muddy Creek. Gravity is a big deal with a smaller tractor.

Not far away. This was on the road from Airville down to Otter Creek and Indian Steps. That hill has to be about at least a mile long, steep and curvy...

rustred, I like to get the info and read prior posts before I post, LOL.

Earphones, as in those devices that protect your hearing so that when you're old and crotchety you have one less thing to complain about (i.e. the ringing in your ears or the inability to hear anything at all)?

I don't know how a device that not only blares music in your ears at a high decibel level to drown out machinery noises but also isolates you from what is going on around you, distracting you from the job at hand, can be considered a beneficial device.

Steven, please tell how you know if someone is wearing hearing protection or headphones and if headphones how loud they have them playing. Most people these days wear hearing protection when operating equipment.

Barnyard Engineering specifically said "earphones": I responded to that term. There is a significant difference between earphone and ear defenders.
