Land Pride mower.

Why does my mower gearbox collect this debris? It didn't used to. Am I low on oil or overfull? The level check on it is very confusing. Is it getting hot? It doesn't seem to. Maybe I have a seal or gasket that's leaking though I see no signs of that.

Looks like you have oil vapor on the gear box and as it collects chaff it builds up more and more like that. Try a vent to a further position from the gear box and see if that makes a difference. Or maybe the vent/breather is plugged forcing oil or vapor out to collect dirt like that.

Looks like it's leaking.

Most gear boxes run the oil about 1/3 way up from the bottom. If it's overfull it will expand and blow out of the vent plug. If there is no vent it will build pressure until it finds a way out, even if it means blowing a seal!

Some gear boxes don't come with a vent for shipping purposes. The vented plug may have come with it and was never installed. If you add a vent, be sure it is positioned so not to let in rainwater.

I would clean it up, check the oil level (correct if necessary), check the vent, look for blown seals. Then run it a short time and check for leaks.

There is no vent. It was overfull of oil when I first started using it. It siphoned ALL the old oil out and filled to what I believe is the correct level of 80W 90. Since then it collects dirt. Was clean before then.

My mower is about 25 years old and I've had it for 15 years. It doesn't do that. It did have the gearbox replaced before I got it because the bottom seal went out and the seasonal help kept running it. I'm pretty sure it has corn head grease in it now. Are you sure your input seal isn't seeping? Usually the level for gear boxes is the bottom of the input shaft. If it has a slight leak on the input, you might want to try the corn head grease.
