Mounting rear tires

Is there a right side and a wrong side to mount rear tires from. My old Allis power adjust rim seems to be a smaller diameter on the outside (valve stem side). I'm assuming that's where to start the process of getting the tire and tube on? steve

I prefer having the hole for the valve stem closest to me. Much easier to insert the tube and stem that way.

I usually work on the valve stem side. Not sure it makes any difference at all. Tubes are easier to work with if tire is half dis-mounted on the valve stem side.

Never seen a rim before, that had a bigger bead wall on one side. Can't say I have ever seen that, except maybe a split rim where one bead wall comes off as a ring, and is just gone when it is removed.

Either way work but yes going from the valve stem side works best because one has control of the stem. Hard to get the stem in place after the tire has both beads on but the stem is inside the tire

It's a lot easier to do with the rim/wheel on the tractor. You can use weight or gravity to your advantage. If just patching a hole, I only break one side down then pull the bead out with a chain to get the tube out and back in. I also inflate the tube some to hold shape before putting second bead on. This helps hold the tube in place while getting the stem set and also helps prevent pinching the tube with the pry bars.

"Smaller diameter?" How is that?

There IS a right side and a wrong side if you have drop center rims. The side closest to the drop center is the one to mount and dismount tires from.

If the drop center is in the middle of the rim, then the side with the valve stem is usually the right side, UNLESS it's on the inside. Then you need one of those valve stem snakes with the t-handle and cable.

Most tractor rims made after 1955 are a flat bottom with no drop center, so whatever side is "out" on the tractor is the "right" side to mount and dismount tires from.

They are MUCH easier to handle on the tractor.
