5 ring pistons John Deere 3010

New User
I am installing pistons
and liners in a 3010 Gas. The instructions with the liners say see piston ring instructions that came with the rings for installation instructions. But... There are none. My question is where does the 3 piece oil ring go? the 4th groove down or 5th? I assume it goes in the 4th but not sure as my old pistons have 2 oil ring that are not 3 piece. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!

Neveragain ..interesting.. but welcome to YT! I would
echo the other reply and possibly stating where you
sourced them may have been helpful. If it was a cheap
overseas kit getting tech help may be near impossible.
Also I will let you know that this forum has a John
Deere specific topic section, I would suggest posting
this over there, see link. Now the rest of this is
personal experience and opinion. I would not spend a
nickel to rebuild the engine on a 3010 gas. Back in the
day we helped a local lawyer who was an heir to a
relatives farm. The main tractor he had was a 3010
gas. In my opinion that thing was the doggiest machine
I have ever been around. Being used to a snappy
Farmall that thing was far from impressive. I remember
disking with it, at the end of field I would turn around
open the throttle I am almost certain I could count to 5
before it made it back to full rpm. I sure was not
impressed with that being my first hands on operation
of a John Deere. I had a friend whos family had a 200
head dairy operation. I helped him in my early 20s. He
had four 4020s along with several bigger 30 and 40
series tractors. I would run one of the 4020s to haul
silage pulling 6 wheel, I suppose they were 18 or 20
foot long self unloader wagons. That is when I learned
that John Deere actually made a real tractor, especially
2 of the 4020s had M&W turbos. Best of luck with your
tractor, you may think it is the best ever.

I can't imagine where the O.P. would have found ''5 ring'' pistons for a 3010 GAS???

Maybe he is counting the 3-piece oil ring as three rings?

I called the company. Riley Tractor Parts in Ohio. And I was correct. The 3 piece conventional oil ring goes in the 4th groove down. And yes these are 5 ring pistons. I just thought maybe someone would know last night and could verify. Instead of waiting to in the morning.
