Radiator screen, locking the barn after the horse is sto

A stone went through the AC condenser core and into the radiator in the wife s truck . $1900 parts and labour .
Decades ago it was popular to place heavy window screen in front of the radiator to provide some protection from bugs and flying debris.
Now to find something that will fit in there , after the damage was done . To protect the radiator etc .

I needed a protector screen / plate for my Massey 240-S. Needed a pretty stout one, as I raked up / scooped up thick blueberry
cuttings out of the aisles after pruning. Nothing worked, until I mounted an electrical single-phase / three-phase transformer
mount plate, used to hang three single phase transformers on a pole to provide three-phase power. Thick, heavy galvanized,
perfect fit. Works perfect. [Sorry, got no photos.] You just have to be inventive, keep looking.

We had a squirrel problem. I found an ace
hardware with a roll of 1/8 inch hardware
cloth collecting dust in the back.
Heavier than window screen. They said it
was no longer listed in the database but
they had the roll laying around.
For your application 1/4 inch hardware
cloth may work and be easier to find.

I doubt screen would have stopped something like that!

If you're concerned it might happen again, something like heavy duty expanded
metal would be more effective. Then that could be covered with screen to stop
the small stuff.

But you don't want to get too restrictive, and it will require periodic
cleaning.

Window screen will restrict the airflow on these modern vehicles way too much. The fronts of these vehicles are closed down to a minimum for aerodynamics and fuel efficiency, and the amount of air inlet is designed down to the square inch, and possibly even undersized, for the cooling needs of the vehicle.

In fact anything in there will adversely affect the vehicle's ability to cool itself.

Heck the steam rolls out from under the hood of my 2015 Chevy on a cool wet evening. I'm told that's normal.

Our JD 4600 has a nice screen in front of the radiator, about like 1/4 hardware cloth. It's in a nice frame and easy to remove for cleaning. A lot of really nice ideas on that tractor.
