Pulling Tops

Skidded some red oak "tops" out of the woods for my neighbor with my D-17 Allis.
At 81, it's nice to have a veteran, now construction worker who knows how to work do the hauling the chains around and do the "hookin'" . Hardly had to get off the tractor at all.
He had his property "logged off" last year which consisted mostly of really big Red and White Oaks.
The "tops" will keep his outside wood boiler "perkin" for a few years to come.

I've lived in Tennessee on two different occasions and that was in two different areas of Tennessee. The first time was in the late 1970s and it was
the first time I have ever actually seen clear cut logging. It wasn't on my place, so it really wasn't any of my business, but it looked to me like a
war zone. The tops were everywhere. The small trees were bent and broken from the big trees that were felled for the logs. The logging equipment
machines had made a mess of the ground. All things considered, I don't think I would ever want to have any place clear cut logged.

I'm with you on that Tom I've seen some real messes around here in MI from that and even from selective cutting when they didn't care where things fell and ruined the rest of the woods for future growth in it. And the tops were just cut off anywhere.

Okay guys......where did you get the idea this was "clear cut"?
This woodlot hadn't been logged in over 50 years and many of the oaks were past there prime. Many were 3-1/2' or more in diameter.
The logger left many trees for future harvest and also left some that were big enough because they were producing a large quantity of acorns.
He was careful in falling those big oaks which took a little extra effort because of their size. He did not leave a lot of damage liked I've seen some other loggers do.
The owner asked him to leave the tops because he expects to feed his outside boiler with the wood for quite a few years to come.
Oak tops can remain in the woods for years with little rot because the limbs keep the main log up off the ground.
Rarely has any clear cutting been done in this part of NY State since the settlers cleared the land for farming.
The exception being that N.Y. Encon has clear cut some of their wood lots here in the past few years, they say, in an effort to "regenerate the forest with healthier trees".

I didn't say anything about clear cutting. And I stated selective cutting. Just they fell the trees any old way and didn't much care about the damage for the future of the timber growing there already. If any timber gets cut out of dad's woods again we will cut it and then put it up for bids. If nobody wants it we will get it sawn into lumber for our selves.
