K3D Mitsubishi won't run

I saved this engine from the crusher to use on an old excavator. I finally got it to start, but it dies immediately. It has an electric fuel pump, and the fuel shutoff solenoid works as intended. The engine is off a 322D Toro mower, but no luck in that repair manual. I've always had gas engines; this is the first diesel I've had to do something other than start and go. Any ideas?

Are you making sure there is no air getting in the fuel system? Since you are referring to the manual of the machine the engine came out of I assume you are aware of the needs of the glow plugs to work and air to be bled out of the fuel system.

If it starts with no starter fluid or gas in the intake, it must be getting some diesel. So, I'd check everything to be sure that the intake is clear. I think that mower had a remote tank with a pump. Are you using that? If so it may have a filter on the pump inlet, probably a sock type that plugs pretty easily.
