Help! Dropped tool into transmission. of David Brown 990

What is the best method to fish a 4 inch socket extension out of a DB 990 transmission?

Shifter was jammed again and I opened it up to reset, but now can't find the tool. I am pretty sure it fell in while I was distracted by something else.

How big is the drain plug?

Often things like that will go right to the drain plug since it's the lowest point.

Possibly it can be stood up and fished out with a magnet.

Or the flex magnet Tony suggested. If you can't get it to the bottom without grabbing everything on its way
down, bend a piece of copper tubing big enough for the magnet to slide inside to guide it down.

I have used cow magnets as they are stronger. tape to a rod and use to fish with. I would say you will have to drain the oil anyway.
sometimes if you get a real strong magnet you can pull it along the bottom and get it to the drain hole.

Drained the tranny. Can't see anything. Tried magnet with flexible shaft and got it stuck in there.

How big of job to remove transmission case cover. Have to remove cluster, steering column first?

How did it fall in with the cover on?

I get your point. Shifter pops out of place once in a while and needs to be removed (using 7/16 socket with extension.) I cheated and tried using extension instead of a pry bar to pry the sliders into position. It fell in through the shifter hole to the bottom (I think, I was distracted trying to grab the socket from falling off the tractor.)

The gearing, shafts and piping are too busy at the shifters to see and/or access.

We got all the bolts out of transmission cover and will try to lift after supper.

Thank-you all for the good advice. Flexible magnetic pickup tool probably would have worked eventually. Advice: make sure the tool's magnetic head is not much bigger than the shaft or it will find a home somewhere in the transmission and not want to leave. My partner in crime (wife) happened to send it into the rear diff.

Anyway, found the socket extension inside, got the transmission top cover back on late last night and just have to put the steering column, instrument cluster and seat back on and should be good to go.

Thanks again!
