Kohler Motor update

A couple days ago I was asking information on my Kohler motor, with no spark. Fritz Maurer mentioned the points were on the side of the motor. Sure enough hanging off the side under a small cover sat the points. A first for me. I probably would have pulled the flywheel. The points were almost not opening. I cleaned and adjusted the points. After 25 or more years my brothers compressor started. A question about the compressor. It's a three cylinder Curtiss I drained the compressor oil. Will 20, or 30 straight wt. oil be ok? Stan

(quoted from post at 01:28:49 07/09/22) We use SAE 30 Non detergent oil in all of our compressors
'm sure that works fine, but you're using extra amps that you don't need to use.

It originally would have had non detergent oil, probably 20 or 30 weight.

You can buy reciprocating (piston type) compressor oil, which is just non detergent oil.

That will work fine for your application, as I doubt the compressor will see hard, continuous service.

Synthetic compressor oil is the best. It resists carboning of the valves when the compressor is seeing a lot of work, running long hours under heavy load.

The reason it needs non detergent oil is because of the ash and carbon deposits in the valves left behind by the detergent additives.

Once you get the compressor up and running, watch it closely to be sure it properly unloads when up to pressure. Since it has been sitting the unload devise mat be stuck or the unloader diaphragms may be rotted. If it fails to unload the pressure will continue to build. Be sure to test the relief valve to be sure it is free and works.

I would love to see a picture of a 3 cylinder Curtiss if you would not mind. I have a few odd ball compressors, that thing of yours sounds pretty badass

I will try and do that. May take a while. I take pictures with my 35 mm camera. Then down load the pictures to my computer after I have a few pictures. Stan
