Have some chemical carryover from last year around the edge, otherwise it's looking ok.

Alfalfa is almost as tall as the oats and barley.

Should be combining in a few weeks. Be nice to get some in the bin.

The hay getting too tall is a be problem for direct combining, but grain cut with the swather and left to dry a few days, just goes through the combine like gas through a funnel. I swathed 50 acres for a neighbour a few years ago. He was about ready to give up on the crop, after plugging his combine several times. A friend told him how I swathed all of my grain and give me a call. So I cut his crop, and he located a pickup head for his combine. He just couldnt believe how well the grain went through the combine, and I was able to cut it down low enough to save the straw too.

I raise it for feed. Don't know of any contract grown small grains, altho it can be forward contracted.

They[use too] contract Barley in West Fargo, and Spirtwood N.D.,if the Barley gets cheaper than open market, then they find something wrong with it and wont honor the contract, think they have burned every farmer around here !!!! How does it work Ohio?

Do you sell the straw? We throw a bale in each of our ponds to keep the moss away. My neighbor sell it for 10 bucks a bale.

I will sell some if I get more than I need fir myself. There is a good market fir it here as well, usually as much Ir mire than hay.

Couple years ago some high-powered developers got our town to rezone 200 acres next to us to allow malting.
The rezoning happened,
Barley got planted - not sure if it was used for feed or malting.
Land was planted in wheat this year.
It's also up for sale at more than the malters paid for it - $$$$$$$

I don't see any rush to plant barley in Ohio. But there are lots of craft breweries.

Anymore most of the malt barley is grown on contract. Very little is traded open market. The malters are fussy and want specific varieties.

There is a large malt plant in Moorhead, MN. The plant in Spirtitwood, ND closed a couple years ago and is currently being converted to a soybean crush plant.

There is also a large amount of feed barley grown in western Canada. Used in place of corn at feedlots.

Barley fed hogs make better sausage than corn fed as the fat is firmer.

all the alfalfa in there should make good beef cow feed. mow it and make into hay those old cows will eat that stuff like candy.
My oats got ahead of me one year more like straw when I got to bale it.cows ate that stuff like no tomorrow

I have baled oats for hay before, the cattle loved it. I may put that straw in round bales and feed it if it looks like it has some feed value after I combine it. I need the grain for feed so I can't make hay from it.
