Put either capsule in bottom, puncture with plunger and pump while turning engine over on 400 CASE tractor.

Yes and no. Im not old enough to remember those but I do have a pair of Case 500 tractors with them so I do know what they are.

I have one on a Lorain loader with a J-130 Cummins.I also have one on an Allis Chalmers dozer with a Buda engine. There are still some of the cartridges in a little rack behind the seat of the Lorain. The guy that bought the loader new said he NEVER EVER used them in that machine.

I don't remember those, but Dad had a M Farmall diesel and had round red balls of ether that he would drop in the air intake to start it when cold.

My first road tractor had a cup on the outside of the air cleaner pipe that you put a red either capsule in it, to start it in the Winter. It was a 63 Mack.It didn't look like that though.

There was something along those lines on the HD5 tractors. We never had the capsules for them. We used liquid ether. Take the cap off the pre cleaner, splash a little in there and start. This was before the Advent of spray cans.

An MD to not start without ether must have been in bad shape. Our MD will start at -20 air temp on gas then would switch over to diesel fuel once ran on gas for a bit. We used it since it would start everyday and twice on sunday for feeding cows when we were milking back then. I've seen the ether pill deals on trucks where they had an oil cup like lid with a pipe to puncture the pill on for starting back when. I've shot ether in them to start those old screamers with in cold weather or a Cummins on occasion. The Cats I just either would start or plugged them in like most of the stuff we use in cold weather. I prefer them plugged in . It's easier on the engine batteries and starter.
