Every time I see how it used to be done with the labor intensity and lack of density in loose hay, I think of how much they would have
to work to equal the fill of a 1600# give or take 5x6 bale made with a properly functioning roller, especially when you see a field full
of them.

And at the time it was quite a labor saver. I wonder if putting hay in a barn loft wasn't harder because of having to use the trolley and tramping it down in a hot confined area.

My first job in the hay field was leading the stacker team, then to raking with team. By
then we were using a pickup to pull the stacker up. Always used a tractor to buckrake.
I put up some loose hay until 1984 Stacked with a F10D on a IH M round balers up a end to
loose hay.

The Amish down the road from me still do it the old fashioned way. I saw them taking a wagon load of loose hay down the road yesterday.
