Ford 950 help

Had this tractor a couple years, used it many hours, never gave us any issues..... Until Sunday evening. Middle of bushhogging, started to run terrible, no power, belching black smoke, back firing, flames 2-3 ft out exhaust stack. Limped on to trailer and then off and in shop. Checking it over this morning. The rubbing block for the points is loose and wobbly. Shaft is tight, just the block with 4 lobes. Can this be changed? I have a spare distributor, or 2, easy to swap out whole thing? Line up rotor to #1, pull old, line up 'new' one, install and go? Advice? Help??

Screw driver points to block

You state rubbing block is loose. the rubbing block is on the movable point arm and touched the distributor shaft 4 lobe cam. easy to fix the points by replacing, the cam can also be replaced. It may require both the cam and outer shaft, as well as the inner shaft with the centrifugal advance attached (behind the breaker plate. Jim

That is the cam. If it is loose, you will need to pull the distributor and replace it with the spare. The cam should have distributor cam lube on it. (the auto store) If the bushing the distributor shaft turns in is worn it can be replaced if you need that distributor for that tractor. Jim

If you have a good spare dist. I would try that first to verify your problem. Put the engine on top dead center of # 1 cylinder and see if your rotor is actually pointing to that on the dist. Mark the block with something and the dist. housing to help with rough timing location, pull the dist. and replace with the good one. (I would verify the points are gapped and working properly on the bench before installing.)Post back if you find the problem.

From looking at the picture:

I see the edge of the centrifugal weight. If I'm seeing it correctly, the weight should be held in the retracted position by the springs.

If the springs are broken, the cam (the part that the points ride on) will have radial slack, but not have side to side movement.

Also looks like the points are closed, out of adjustment.

Also the cam and rub block are dry. They need a small amount of high temp grease, just enough to lube them but not sling off.

I would take the distributor out, take it completely apart. Check everything for wear and function. If salvageable clean it up, replace the worn or missing parts, lube the bearings/bushings, put it all back together and live happily ever after!

Or trade it for a rebuilt one.
