IH 1066 starting issue

Asking for a friend looking for ideas:
Tractor won't start from the operator station; will start if you short out the solenoid with a screwdriver. Also, suddenly the lights won't work.

I'm thinking these are two separate problems; but they could be related I guess. Lights may be a fuse or broken wire. I'm thinking the starting problem has to be the ignition switch or start button. Batteries checked good; starter replaced.

Thanks for a point into the right direction. Michael

There is a wire (probably 10 gauge) that is attached at the starter (battery cable connection stud) that provides power to the entire tractor it attaches to the key, lights, and alternator through fuses and relays. Tracing this power from that connection will find the open circuit. Use a test light to follow the voltage. Jim

There are lots of possibilities. A voltmeter will be your best friend. There is a neutral switch that has to close when the clutch is depressed. It is located behind the clutch pedal. Id look there first.

Look at the gages when you turn the key on if they work then you probably have juice to the switch and then look at the push button on it. I'm betting that something got lost in the wires when he changed the starter if this is a new ailment. If not then I would next look for juice to the light switch if juice there then probably the switch is bad. I've never found a fuse to the system on the key switch nor the lights on any of the following tractors in working on them. My 806,856 nor the 1466. I'm almost sure there must be one just never saw it.
