Vermeer 3347 Large Square Baler review

Howdy,

I have been getting into small time, high quality hay production. I have been getting requests from dairy goat guys to make large squares. My current custom baler does a good job, but he has missed getting a few cuttings baled before rain, one this year and two last year. :?

I am looking to purchase a large square baler for myself, but a lot of them are out of my price point for couple hundred acres of hay I run, especially if I am not going to do custom work.

I have come across a Vermeer 3347 large square baler that seems to be in good shape and at a good price. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this baler and if it has any problems?

Thanks!

Im assuming you have run into this comment but be very
careful. The pickup and packer forks etc that feed the chamber
do wear on big square balers and can need 10-20,000$ of work
when pickup and sheet metal on the outside still look pretty.

Buying an off brand with poor parts availability can make this a
terrible experience. Ive been told if considering it, buy old
Heston based models as there are parts and junk balers all over
the US.

I Googled that model baler & several sold at auction for $5-$8.500 which indicates that model may be similar to a JD 100 sq baler & may have some inherit problems.

Finding a person with hands-on experience with this baler may be difficult as there are very few of them around. It is an imported machine not actually built by Vermeer so it would be
wise to do some homework on what the parts availability is prior to buying one. Looks like the asking prices of the ones for sale on-line right now are roughly half of what a similar-
vintage Hesston 4790 would sell for and there must be reasons for this.

How far to the nearest Vermeer dealer?? Are his shop guys any good with this baler?? I'd hate to have problems with it and when the service man comes he says, I've never seen one of these before.

If buying a big square baler I would only buy a Hesston or the CaseIH that was built by Hesston. Very good balers with great parts
availability. There are lots of the 3x3 models in my area and we have two dealers that really know how to maintain them. Tom

Thanks for the responses. I was already nervous about the purchase, I think I will pass on the baler. I did not know that it was an imported model.

I would definitely prefer an older Hesston. I have a 4600 inline that makes the best small squares I have ever made. I will just continue to get custom bales made until I can find the right one come up.
