Farmall cub shifting funny

Last summer i bought a farmall cub from auction, when i went to look at it it ran and shifted like a dream and everything worked good. But when i got it home (about a week after looking at it.) I went to mow a little grass and the pto started grinding and you have to hold 2nd gear in and 3rd gear wont stay in. Did sombody damage somthing by dropping the clutch or somthing of that sort. What should be my firts step of getting this sorted out.
Thanks nate

You more than likely did NOT have the pto engaged while you were at the auction trying it. Probably a bearing down causing shaft to ride up .

Many times things like that will not show up running with no load like your PTO is. then you put a load on it like the mower and now some of the problems rear their ugly head. NOt your fault nor theirs just something that happens. Auctions are a pay your money and take a chance.

Worn parts in Trans.
Good thing about it....parts are still available for the transaxle
since the same transaxle was used in the early cub cadets and the
garden tractor pullers like them for pulling.

I emailed you..... Wife and I have bought, fixed, and sold 35+ cubs over the last couple years. Be happy to help you fix yours!
