Transmission or final drive issues

I had a cream colored substance running out of the left rear side of my Cub. I pulled the plug and drained at least 1 to 1-1/2 gallons of water out. There appears to be a lot of black slimy sludge in there to so I took the plug off the top and have been adding small does of diesel and draining it to try and flush it out. I know I need to add SAE90 but am not sure how much I need to put in.
Curious how the water would have got in there to start with. I have owned this tractor for 10+ years and until this week it never was left outside.
 
You can get to most everything by pulling the shifter and if you're really concerned, pull the PTO cover off the rear.

Did you change the oil when you got it? If not most of the water was in it when you got it. People like to blame this on condensation but it would take a LONG time for 1-1/2 gallons of water to condense inside a space as small as a Cub powertrain.
 
Final drives have their own gear oil. It's in the pans on the bottom. Only way to drain is to remove the 947 bolts, (slight exaggeration) and dump out. Refill in the plug in the side. I almost always just top it off. Hardly ever remove and drain.
 


As Steve posted it is condensation. Unless you have a dehumidifier in your building as I do you will keep getting it. The solution is to once a year drain the water off the bottom. If you use UTF you will need to do a complete change every year, because UTF absorbs the water.
 
Water also gets inside from leaving the tractor set outside and rainwater collects at the platform bolt holes. My Farmall 350 sat in one spot for 5 years before I bought it at auction. Drained the oil and got 5 gallons of water and 8 gallons of water. Its no uncommon for some tractors to have their transmissions freeze solid in the winter with all the water that has collected in them.
