John Deere 8440 or 8630.

A guy has a 8440 and a 8630 for sale about the same shape and hours it would be for light duty use which is a better tractor.

When you say the same shape does that mean in good condition or otherwise? For light duty I would think that the 8440 would use considerably less fuel. If original and 1980 and after would mean crankshaft driven oil pump for the engine which is a plus. I've gotten along fairly well with an 8430 that has been here since 1980 but has a 50 series replacement engine. Be prepared for many to say to look at something else. Used to be quite a number of 8000 series 4wd tractors around and it was not because the owners wore green and yellow underwear. The early 4wd's all had their problems regardless of brand and model.

The 8630 is nice to drive because of it's much larger engine and lugging ability off of idle. (619 cubes vs. 466.)

The 8440 SHOULD be more reliable and less likely to give catastrophic engine problems.

Since both tractors have made it this far my answer to which one would be better is neither and both. Neither has an advantage over the other far as reliability is concerned and both are flawed. I would tend to take the 8630 just so it isnt stressed as much as the 8440. Be aware that any major breakdown will involve a lot of shop time and work. They arent a modular design like a Versatile were you can replace a clutch out in the field in an afternoon.

I disagree in this situation. A small block engine in big
heavy frame 4x4 is going to be stressed more doing the
same job as the bigger tractor with the bigger engine in
the OPs post. Plus the 8440 will have a poor power to
weight ratio. We did have a 8440 for a short time and a
4640. Unless you were in our hills, the 8440 wasnt
much of an improvement over the 4640 on the drawbar.
Plus we blew the head gasket in the 8440. The 4640
never let us down once in the 18 years we owned it.

For light duty I would choose the newer 8440. I has to be light duty as you will find it is not a powerhouse as it is heavy for the power. I have run an 8450. For heavy pulling get a Versatile or Steiger. The owner of said 8450 has lots of trouble with it but somehow he keeps it going. It has a dozer on it and is his silage packing tractor. A SGB 4 x 4 tractor is without doubt one of the coolest tractors ever made so you will look good in it and that is important. If you want to see an 8640 outfitted with triple hay mowers you will have to check out 406 farmer on youtube.
