Same reason as cars of the time were one color. This one is unusual though in that the restorer painted the starter red as it is supposed to be. It is a common misconception that they need to be black, because the rebuilders didn't stock colors, they stocked black only, which is what the car starters were.

If you're referring to the tractors, it's because today is red day. The other day they were all green; another day they were all orange.

While I never have had the opportunity to drive a M
with a wide front axle, I always thought how much
more practical to use than the standard front W6 was.
I did have the narrow front M for many years, and still
have a W4. It just seems the M affords the operator a
much better view from the seat. And a more
comfortable position to operate the foot pedals from,
compared to the Standard W9 W6 and W4 models
offered.
