Land Pride mower deck AGAIN

My previous post was about a scraping noise coming from a 25-72 Land Pride mower deck. Several thought that it was a knife scraping the side of the deck. I
wish that was the case. I have removed the knives and still have the same sound. This is my neighbor's mower and he backed over the tire and bracket that
holds the tire causing the noise. Any more guesses??? Thanks, Ellis

Is the deck bent at all? Like where the gearbox bolts down to it? Could the shaft coming out of the box be rubbing on the deck where it comes thru? Seems like something would have to be bent since he backed over the wheel assembly. Maybe run it and then feel/use infra-red gun for something getting hot in a short period of time and that would be where it rubs? Mark.

Might try disconnecting the PTO shaft, turn it by hand, see if there is any noise or tight spot. Have someone watch the blade shaft to see if it is bent.

Look the mounting surface over around the gear box for cracks. Sometimes a crack will make a chirping sound from vibration and flexing.

If it has a stump jumper disc in the center, it could have a piece of the wheel/mount stuck in there. Jim

Since you mentioned it was a finish mower, I would have to say a shaft is bent. Sounds like a shaft guard may be rubbing against the housing.

I'd bet it's in the gearbox. Happened to one of ours once. Take the belt off and spin it up to speed to see if you still hear it. Those decks have no stump jumpers and the knife tip to shroud clearance is not tight. The only way a tip will hit at speed is if the shaft it's spinning on is loose. Could be a bearing on one of the shafts, likely the one that took the hit.

Those linch pins fall out regularly, especially if brushed up against a branch of a shrub. I always double cable tie ours in an X around the pin and ring to help prevent them opening. Gets expensive if repeated too often.

Pretty easy to pot the tops off then you pry the spring idler over and thro the belt off. Then turn each spindle one at a time. You will probably find that the blade that hit the tire has a bent shaft or maybe just a busted bearing. Not a bad job to put a bearing in the spindle. I highly doubt it is in the gearbox. The gearbox on those is really sturdy . Once you get the belt off you should be able to isolate the place anyway.
