Allis chalmers wd45 stuck in gear

Need some guidance here, last Friday I was driving one of our
wd45s in a parade and I got it home and went to go from 1st to
reverse and it wouldnt go into reverse. This happens sometimes
with this particular tractor, I ended up taking the whole shift cover
off of it and got it out of gear and now I cant seem to get the top
shift cover to function properly. Does the cover need to be able
to go into gear and hold a position when it is not on the
transmission? What do I need to do to get the cover to be able to
function properly? I know it needs to be in second gear to put the
cover back on, but I cant seem to get it in 1st or 2nd gear. Any
help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,Collin

The transmission top cover is designed to position the gears correctly and this is accomplished using springs pushing on steel balls into grooves. The positioning is not a lock, it is however, important to the shifter function, and gear selection. Gears need modest positioning to stay engaged. going up hills and down as well as minor inter-gear forces. The mechanism is called a detent. The second recommendation is to make sure the shifter forks and actual gears are where they belong as you lower the top into position. Good lights, and maybe a helper are needed. Jim

i have had the cover off mine due to stuck in 2 gears. nothing hard, make sure trans gears are all in neutral and the same with shifting forks, neutral position. carefully sit it on matching the forks to gears.

Pull the shifter out, take a flash light and a long screw driver, line up the slots it'll put it back into neutral. And when you shift into 3rd gear don't push up in the shifter
