Auctions and high price of gas

Has the high price of gas kept anyone from going to farm auctions? It was 90 miles to an auction yesterday and it was 100 degrees , five dollar gas , I stayed home

Auction 50 miles from me yesterday on line and on site bidding, probably would have gone if gas not so high, stayed home and got outbid. So got some things done instead of driving, like on line auctions more all the time.

Since I quit farming I dont have the need to attend farm auctions however if there was something I was interested in Id still go even with record high gas HOWEVER with all the online going on there aren't as many old fashion farm auctions as there used to be.

I have always liked to go to auctions when the weather and or distance is outside most peoples comfort zone. I figure less people to bid against me. But with online biding that is now not the case. I fear all auctions will soon be online, as the online prices are much higher than the in person auctions. I will miss talking to the neighbors, meeting new people, buying a hotdog and homemade goodies from the food vendor of the day. It will be just one more social gathering of the past, that has fallen to the internet.

Not sure about your area, but in my area, old fashion farm auctions drastically decreased in numbers before all this online auction thing came about. Online probably hasn't helped, but we were definately seeing fewer auctions anyways, (around here).

I can't really explain it. But I think alot of people were weeded out in the 80's. As the average farm has gotten bigger, the number of farmers has reduced, in turn reducing the number of farmers and the number of farm auctions.

But one of the bigger kickers around here is, real estate agents/auctioneers will turn thier nose up at having a sale if there isn't any real estate involved, and there isn't a lot of stuff worth while. As in say, someone has a little bit of stuff, no real estate, and then mainly household. Around here, those people are suggested (or told) to take there little bit of stuff to a consignment sale, and have a garage sale for the household items. So I guess, farmers aren't the only ones who have gotten bigger. Auctioneers no longer waste thier time with the small stuff, in a way. And that also reduces number of auctions.

Just more has went on, than the new online thing. And those things were taking hold, even before.

I was never known to go very far away to an auction, even when gas prices weren't an issue.

If it was for something I really wanted, and knew I was going to be a serious bidder on the item, I don't think the current gas prices would stop me from going. But for me, it definately would be, just make the exception of the high gas prices, for a one time deal.
I don't run to auctions every weekend, just to go. So it's probably easier for me to make that one time exception.

Its basically the same here, hardly any old fashion farm auctions nowadays, even though I no longer farm I still do miss them

The times they are a changin

Auctioneer told me several years ago that household items are not a big draw. Furniture and beds could possibly carry with them bed bugs or other critters. As far as driving and online sales, nearly all of them offer shipping, or pick-up at the location. If you buy online you still pay for gas. gobble

It hasn't kept me at home yet..If theres older tractors on the sale I'll still drive 100 miles or more..I'll take my Pontiac Grand Prix that gets 27 mpg...On June 4th I had to miss a sale 70 miles away because I had a tractor pull..On it was a 2-135 White,2-105 White,2-85 White,(2) 670 MM LP burners,M-5 MM,445 MM,30 Cockshutt-etc...Years ago I bought a 40 Oliver SP combine from the seller..

It will be a sad day for me if and when when live auctions are no longer held..I just dont care much for online auctions..

Nowadays that I dont really need anything I dont go to too many auctions, most I go to are between 30 40 miles away, and less, theres a livestock auction probably 15 miles from me but I dont go to that anymore either, farthest auction I ever went to was in Pennsylvania I cant remember how far it was from here it was a whole day trip, If remember, I think it was called Honesdale, my car gets 27 miles to the gallon so you can drive to the auction or plan on bringing the truck and trailer, either way its gonna cost you quite a bit now, Furthest piece of equipment I ever dragged home was my new Holland 489 haybine, out past the ACG guys place maybe 45 miles, 50 miles, that was in 2005,

Yes I found that to be pretty nice too, but for example Lorens auction yesterday was 10% buyer commission at the sale on site , 13% for online bidding, which is fine but you gotta keep that in mind when youre bidding on something,

I almost exclusively bid on the online / hybrid auctions. Too much time wasted to stand around on-site and get sun burnt just to get out bid.

Bought lots on two different auctions last week. Bought a IH 1300 sickle an hour away and a post driver three hours away. Wish I had bought more stuff on the auction with the long drive...

That's the long and short of it right there. Household stuff is notorious for not selling well. An auctioneer can spend an hour selling a row of lots and only gross $60 at $1 a lot. Even the "big" stuff like furniture doesn't tend to bring more than a few hundred dollars. Can't hardly give the appliances away.

It honestly and truly is a waste of time for them. Not to mention, a money-loser.

I haven't gone to an auction in years. Any that I did go to stuff always sold for more than I thought it was worth, a lot of stuff close to the price of new. Never saw the appeal actually.

I'd rather buy direct from someone. Tell me what you want for it and I'll either buy it or make a counter offer or say that's more than I want to pay for it.

Online auctions don't interest me in the least.

No auctions any more with anything I would be interested in. And if on line do not even look at sale bill. And then there are auctioners that were so bad that I will not read their sale bills due to crap I have had with then before. Even if there was something I would be interested in.
