1) So we went to a Steak n Shake with NO WAITRESSES. They ONLY had kiosk where you inserted a CC and placed your order NO EMPLOYEES ANYWHERE TO HELP OR ANSWER QUESTION. Several older people just gave up and walked out. The wife and I were super HUNGRY and love SnS so we fumbled around finally placed and paid for an order heard a speaker say pick up by a window. Couple GOOD things no tipping and the receipt had a coupon which gave us both a free burger next trip WHY NOT. Of course the CC sells our data and we get adds and gave up some privacy GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR but we were hungry and love SnS lol

2) We went with my favorite daughter and SIL to a huge pizza joint in Texas, walked in sat down no waitresses or greeters, we find a blank menu has QR codes,,, we see daughter on her phone and in a few short minutes someone brings them pizza and beer TO THE TABLE that had no numbers I saw....A longgggggggg time later wife and I finally scan the menu QR and order finallyyyyyyy get our food. We gave up privacy and info the CC can sell HOWEVER I dont think cash was even an option nor were there any menus besides scan with your phone and order nor would any waitresses take an order ??????

3) Some dont carry cash or a wallet their phone does all that. Went to a movie once with the kids walked in I was looking for a booth to buy all our tickets son says follow me he walks past a screen where he flashes his phone and we go in. Later he gets on phone and someone brings us popcorn. Some have their CC tied to their phone and flash it dont even get CC out

NO PRIVACY AND THIS PROVIDES TRACKING AND INFO FOR CC AND ALL THEY SELL TO AND EVEN OUR LOCATION

This is NOT for us old farts I dont like it or use it typically but have no other options in some cases BUT OF COURSE WE CAN JUST NOT DO BUSINEES THERE OR NOT USE A CC We still have choices but give up privacy when we go with the system and are tracked grrrrrrrrrrr

Whats this world coming to ?????????

Best wishes to everyone and to each their own choices and opinions

On the other hand; Twice in the past year, I have one into establishments and been told, Our internet is down, we can only take cash. Fortunately, this old goat still carries cash, along with my debit card.

I refuse to use my phone for anything other than talking and texting, and sometimes I am too fumble fingered to even do that.

We went to a restaurant that had a QR menu that you had to scan.. I told the waitress that we would like to see the senior menu. She brought us a traditional menu.

Info out there. If everyone would just do a search using just their first and last name they would be surprised at what comes up about them. Your phone number, age full address, middle name, members of your family and even list of your closest neighbors. You can also click on any of the names and learn some more things.

I don't like it either, John T... But the young ones take to the digital stuff, like ducks to water.

Youngest daughter (early 20's), does almost everything by phone. She only has online banking - NO brick and mortar building she can go to.

After our South Dakota Trip, I was going to reimburse her for my share of gas out of my leftover travel funds... NOPE. 'I need you to write me a check, Mom... so I can deposit it online to my account.'

I wonder what pushed those establishments to go that route?

Owned by millenials and want to be on the cutting edge?

Or they opted for that technology to avoid paying enough and dealing with employee life issues?

Next on the menu:
No servers either. Your food is delivered to table by a drone.
Already being done per the news in a few places.

Bob Dylan (originally Robert Zimmerman) had it right in 1964 ..... the times they ARE in fact a changin' ..... and for a lot of us, not always for the better or easier. We haven't experienced any of that yet mind you, we are still cave dwellers up here .... ha!

One of our favorite Mexican restaurants went to the QR code or whatever it's called, no menus (for our safety sake from you know what). We had a guest with us that had never been there, so we needed a menu.

Well, none of us knew what to do, the waitress had no clue either, I asked for a menu. Told there are none. What about a to go menu? Nope...

Then we're leaving.

They reluctantly came up with a paper menu, we ate and have not gone back.

This just tells me they don't want to deal with the seniors. Not going where I'm not wanted.

I can't do that on my old flip phone.
So I guess we will just stay home and eat what we have canned.
Gonna start canning this week.
Collards are the best I have ever grown.
Then potatoes and soon green beans.
I am old fashioned and intend to stay that way.

Bill Gates said that 15.00 hour minimum wage would be the end of people taking food orders.. Kiosks would be the next step. That was several years ago. So here we go.

John, I'm just a youngster (65), and I want know part of that. Technology is great, but so is the human experience.

Here is some useless facts about technology on a slow Saturday morning. The Shakers, a very religious group of about 2,200 members living in communes all over the northeast, and as far west as Ohio and down to Tennessee, were founded by an English woman, (I think her name was Ann Lee). Well, unlike other religious sects, such as the Amish and Mennonites, they strongly embraced technology. A shaker woman came up with the concept of a circular saw blade while she was spinning wool on a spinning wheel watching men working a two-man saw. They also had something to do with the advancement of vulcanizing jackets and such to make them water proof.

They also strongly embraced celibacy, which is why there are only, literally, a handful left. If your are ever in New Hampshire, you should see the restored Shaker community in Canterbury, just north of Concord. Yes they give guided tours. Know that the current community is about one fourth of the original size.

I have never visited a place with this QR menu. Marilyn and I are gluten free. Is there a place where a person can type in gluten free to see the gluten free choices? It might be handier for us two because sometimes a live waitress doesnt have a clue what gluten free means.

Our two favorite restaurants are buffets, get you own food and the waiters and waitresses are very good.Do go to Texas Roadhouse once in awhile printed physical menus and the help there is excellent.Lots of retired folks and many restaurants around so they better have good food and service.

In high school early '60's I worked in a Rexall drug store. Had to learn each customer's idiosyncracies. Some spoke German, some didn't want to pay sales tax, some were drunk, some thieves, some had nicknames you had to learn, a few late night pickpockets I chased down the main drag to retrieve merchandise. It was many years of a real learning experience.

I went to a movie theatre this past week where everything was paid fo by phone including our meal. Yes! A meal while watching Top Gun Maverick. The theatre had been totally transformed during the recent lockdown and had brand new overstuffed chairs with electric buttons to adjust to any position you wanted and a little attached table that you could swing in front of you after sitting down. We ordered our meals with the Iphone and they were brought out by a waitress and placed on our little tables. Nothing extravagant. I had a mushroom, onion burger. My wife had fried chiken and my son had pizza. I just had a bottle of water with my hambuger. My hamburger cost $14.50 and the bottle of water was $7. (more than a whole case of water would cost at a store) Big screen. Not a bad seat in the house. A great experience, I thought.

I would have the same problem with my flip phone, I think they are waiting for us old folks to die off. Stan

Well i am answering my own question. Sitting in an Applebees as i type this. I took a pic of the bar code and with help from my granddaughter and Marilyn i typed in gluten free and came up with the GS (gluten sensitive) menu. I am never too old to learn.

Texas Roadhouse is one of my favorites. A very good steak around 13 bucks with hot fresh yeast rolls, seasoned butter, nice garden salad, baked potato with extra butter, and I ask for extra croutons and melted butter for steak dip mmmmmmm mmmmmmmmm AND REAL MENUS AND WAITRESSES plus they take cash or CC and dont ask my phone number. I just take an extra blood pressure pill or a baby aspirin with my beer LOL

John T Traditional but no longer a farmer

did not reply to the original thread, but as far as buying tubes , no info given , agree 100% should not have to but when you buy anything on-line, they got everything about you
how ever , same place, there is a problem with the tubes, ultra goes back and tells them owner says let me check the transactions ? nope, not here CYA later
cash should be good, but more and more is not run in to this at golf courses, will only take a card ! asked one employee, what happens when a person shows up and only has money, no cards ? his reply was he goes the heck home ! asked why , the guy said it takes one whole problem out of the equation, money missing ! and from what I have seen from our youngsters that work in that trade, they can't add $6 and $6 with out going to their phone, let alone make change from a twenty sad, sad world we are coming to, but will be cash less I am sure in a few years
bob in my opinion

I'm one of the younger guys on here 44 and I still use a flip phone. Does that put me in with the old folks? Lol. I just don't understand a lot of this technology mumbo jumbo.

Well, we don't go 'out'. I go to Town once a week. groceries, library and a couple beers at the local beernazium. All with my mask on.

This same for air miles cards and any other loyalty cards. Cookies on your web browser and plates on your car.

Yes there are networks of privately owned plate scanners that index the movement of vehicles. Some is for things like parking and private toll roads but you have to agree to let the data be sold to police etc for tracking stolen cars or banks finding vehicles to repo.

Like the modern version of the nosy neighbour who kept tabs on everything you did.

I dont have a cell phone. My choice. Im not against progress and I know things change. Back in the 80s through the 2010s I was working with computers when that was a DOS thing, helping friends set them up or what to buy, helped a few businesses too. I was putting out newsletters with a dot matrix printer before photoshop existed, when they had to fool the printer into making pictures by printing the period symbol over and over.....

So Im not at all against technology.

But - I dont have a cell phone, and dont want one.
