Pretty Easy to make a JD 730 Dsl Run Backwards

As a kid, my buddy who had a John Deere 730 Diesel told me how to make it run backwards. Of course I had to try it. With a plow socked into hard soil, pulled the engine down til it was ready to die, hit the hand clutch and lo and behold you had six speeds backwards. It was a kick. kelly PS Of course to get it back to forward six speeds the same thing had to be done.

I think JD ground the cams different later on to prevent them from doing that. I thought it was with the 720's that gave the problem.

Don't worry. Can't back up with a trailer plow in the ground anyway. The 730 running backwards was 60 some years ago. It was traded in for a 4020 and that for many other, subsequent tractors over the years. The high school buddy is also gone now, but for me it is a goofy teenage farm kid memory.

I think the newer cams didn't start with the first 730, so you memory could be correct. How much oil came out the intake? That trick usually made a mess when the oil based air filter burped.

Had a 720 run backwards on me was about 12 years old cultivating beans idle down to turn hit the brake and hydraulics at the same time. Breather made a mess for sure stood on both brakes to kill it.

Wasn't the cam change made when they went to the black dash models in the middle of 720 production? I have heard of many 70's doing it. Tom

hope you did not let it run too long. That happened to My 800 Case diesel when i had throthle issues. shut it off with decompressor, let go too soon, and VIOLA that Gal was running backwards, belching smoke out the breather and puking oil everywhere from the breather. Dont think any harm was caused , BUT GOLLY , i just was not expecting that.

Got a 471 Detroit to start up in reverse by accident once, rolling the machine & popping the clutch. It sounded awful & puked oil here and there. Tried to avoid that thereafter.

I know of a guy that did that to a 900 case but hit the starter instead. Blew the starter about 50 feet away. Ruined trans housing plus more.

(quoted from post at 14:22:05 06/10/22) If I'm not mistaken, those old Detroits could be set up to run in either direction.

The 71 series at least were modular, marine & all. Could be rigged to do just about anything.

I had that happen with our 1960 730 diesel when I was about 14 years old. I was plowing and it just about killed & I clutched it and it started running backwards. It pumped oil into the precleaner!
