Today is my last day for me changing my Oil.

I decided today is the end for me getting under my cars and truck to change oil.

I bought my buick new in 2005 and GMC truck new in 2007.
I trusted my dealer to service the buick and GMC when they were under warranty , 5 years.

I have confidence in my local GM dealer. No screw ups in 17 years.

My GM dealer charges $39.99 plus tax for a full synthetic oil change and the 5th oil change is free. So that works out to 5 oil changes for $160 plus tax.

My 2018 cadillac requires full synthetic and oil changes work out to 6000 miles.

The best thing is that the Tire Barn is next door to my GM dealer.

So every oil change I'll go next door and have tires rotated and balanced for FREE. I will schedule oil changes around lunch time and have the boss pick me up to go out for lunch instead of sitting around. Then while the tires are getting balanced go shopping at Krogers..

With inflation, What would it cost you for 5 oil changes, filter and full synthetic if you did it yourself??

I'm too old and have no desire to get under another vehicle.

Last month my Buick used a half tank of gas. My truck is semi-retired after selling a rental property last year.

I used my truck to pull my Kubota over to rental and mow 2.25 acres. Last year I used the implement trailer 2x and dump trailer 2x.

My Kubota hasn't taken a ride in a year.

Going to be a few years before it takes a ride to my dealer in town..

I will service all Tractors, except for Kubota which is under warranty. I'll also service all my riding mowers.

I'm officially done with servicing Vehicles..

Without asking I can all but guarantee you that $39.99 price was in place before all this recent inflation.

Don't be surprised if it doesn't jump up $10-$20 per oil change in the near future. With the costs going up $39.99 is just not sustainable.

Don't feel any guilt, we/I wish we could do the same. Anymore, I start to get that sick feeling if I lay under a car too long. And then, there's the problem of getting back up on my feet.

I reached that milestone the first time I went to change my Jetta. My 4wd Blazer is just as bad.$15.00 when I provide oil & filter

My wife run a 2011 Renault Espace with a 150hp 2 liter Diesel.
Oil change resuired every 30000km or 18000 Miles.
Changing synthetic oil every 6000 Miles is just funny.

A used 2 columns car lifter is not that expensive, but cannot pay itself doing car change.

I haven't seen any oil/filter changes for $39.99 lately, synthetic or otherwise, and suspect that your price is out of date.

Local Chevrolet dealer went from $49.99 with coupon to $59.99 with coupon about a year ago. Heard that price had gone up again recently.

I've been buying cars there for decades and still have not paid for any such services, though most have been done by the dealer. Those that have not have been performed by me.

Most worrisome to me is new guy stripping out threads in oil pan (happened to friend of mine at Toyota dealership about a month ago) and use of impact wrenches/torque sticks on lug nuts which always results in over torque. I always loosen/retorque lug nuts upon return home and all are always badly over-torqued unless missed.

Agree, that one is going to have at least $30.00 in oil and filter these days even if prudently shopping sales, etc.

It's been $39.99 for many years and $39.99 my last oil change in
late January 2022.
Will be getting another oil change soon.
They advertise on TV $39.99 full synthetic oil change.

No, the Buick is the Boss's car.
She's retired and doesn't get out much..
Still a good car. 112K miles.

The fun is gone for me. Enjoy changing your oil..
I need to have my tires rotated at the same time I have oil changed. Do two things at the same time and not get dirty.

Well George, I changed the oil in my 1997 F150 a week ago and when I was done I announced to Barb that that was the last time. Crawling under and squirming around was too much, shoulders and back ached ,crawling out and getting on my feet was a chore. I bought synthetic on sale at Canadian Tire for $34.99 and a filter for $8 , thats $42 plus tax. Then I use two or three shop towels and Have to get rid of the used oil.$49 or $59 sounds like a bargain to me. At $49 I'm only saving $7 , at $59 I'm only saving $17..to be sore and stiff after and maybe getting oil on my clothes...I'm done with doing oil changes , I agree with you Gearge

Don't forget to factor in the 5th oil change is FREE.
That works out to an average of $32 oil change..
I can't see working for nothing..

t is said, "don't let old age get you down.....because it is too hard to get back up!"......and that is the truth, darn it! :(

I hear you George. I used to use on a creeper to roll under the running board on my older pickup with no problems, now it is a tight squeeze. Maybe the reason new pickups are getting higher is so fat old men can still get under them, LOL. Add in the time and hassle to bring the used oil to the service station for recycling. For only an extra $10 I might as well let them do the whole oil change while I drink their free coffee and read their old magazines.

I checked today, Walmart has now raised the price of their PIT CREW oil change up to $22.88 for 5 qts of conventional oil, a new filter, grease, and tire pressure check. Even with the cheapest oil and the cheapest filter that must be a loss leader as most people will shop for other things while their car is being serviced. For an older car or for someone on a tight budget that is a good deal.

I hear you. Havent done a oil change on my road vehicles in years. Tractor is the one I still do. Fairly easy.

George. We think youre doing the right think. Lol. I got a weird feeling if I stay too long underneath a vehicle. Speaking of synthetic oil. 59.99 volt Explorer 4x4. 115.00 for F-250 Lariat diesel 4x4. Both cases with house air filter. Quite a few times I require a new air filter but I buy it and change out myself. Sort of common to change air filter on a diesel more often than a gas burner. Not cheap in SETX. No coupons that I know of. I know some shops with good employees but we have our share of places that have employees that dont mind cross threading your oil pan plug and not putting back the dip stick. My guys know me and always do me a good job. Wingnut

If you lived in my hood I doubt we would ever bond : (... I work for big tippers those that don't I have no time for : ) and they all know it... I doubt there is any value added to the service they will get good pay for the bate I guarantee it...

I went to Jiffy lube one time, 35 years ago. Took over an hour for wait time and travel. Only time. Been doing my whole familys oil changes since. Stay home,15 minutes, save money. And, my Ford Escape has over 344k miles on it. Enough said.

I can't find a place that can change oil without a problem and on my schedule so I change all the oils on everything. I buy oil in barrels and then just use out of the barrel so it is cheaper in a barrel than in Qts or Gallons. With all the engines that need oil changes I can't bother with oil in less than barrels either. And Oil has jumped about 300.00 a barrel since about December. Now is 700 barrel for both engine and Transhydraulic oil.

In the book 'Die with Zero', Bill Perkins said that people that pay others to provide services for themselves, are happier. Let the smiles begin.

I know I'm happier letting someone else change the oil on my vehicles.

Having first degree burns on my hands and forearms for the next two weeks after changing oil got old when I was in my 20's.

Gotta change that oil HOT. Gotta. Can't do it any other way. You're leavin' all the sludge in the oil pan if you don't take it out, run the pants off it, and dump the oil the moment you get home.

So your fingertips get burned as you try to fumble the drain plug that last thread out of the pan. Your hands get burned as the initial burst of boiling-hot oil pushes out past the plug.

Or you can just spin the plug off and let it drop in the bucket of hot oil, and get burned fishing around for it later.

Then there's the filter. I have yet to own a vehicle that didn't have the exhaust pipe making a complete 360 around the oil filter for some reason. Good luck getting the filter out without getting at least one burn on your forearm.

No room for gloves. No room for sleeves. It's bare hands and arms, or you're not getting in there.

Wait for it to cool off? Who's got time for that? I don't. Besides if you let it cool off, the sludge won't come out!

f you have sludge in your oil, you might want to rethink your oil change interval.

This is not the one I have the one I have I brought off a tool truck its handy and prized.

If I had to make a guess S.U.R.R. made it all their tools are top notch. I would not take take a share in a gold mine for it : ) BTW when you break the oil plug lose if you can not remove it by hand it needs a oil plug. Some many times I see shops keep using a oil plug with stretched damaged threads it wrecks the oil pan. : ( I doubt a new oil plug is gonna break ya.

Cant find fault with your decision to pay others! :)

I think oil changes will go up in price pretty rapidly here, but so would buying your own supplies.

Often times the flunky is the one delighted to oil change duty, so you might not always get the service you think you should, but usually it works out.

I have no idea if I have sludge. Just following the universal advice that I have heard practically every day since I first watched my Dad change the oil on something. Change that oil hot or you'll end up with sludge in the pan!

Back then I changed my vehicles every 3000 miles. Current vehicles recommend 7500 but I change them at 6000.

t might surprise you then that Jiffy Lube takes the hit for thousands of engines a year because of those type of flunkies.
