Farmall m backfire

Hello so a couple weeks ago I started my Farmall m up after an oil change and it started great and ran great actually. The next day I tried to start it nothing infact it just backfires out the carb and exhaust. And the fire ball is pretty big that comes out of there sometimes. The first time was louder than a 12 gauge... So I'm not exactly sure what's going on here. Could it be points ? Or something else. Could it even be out of time? I did put 5 gallon of non ethanol fuel to it but I don't think that'll cause this problem. Thanks in advance.

Unless someone messed with it or
something broke it ain't out of
time...... It's extremely rare that
timing just changes.

I'd bet it's electrical. A bad ignition switch can do that too.....start trouble shooting, there's lots of past articles on here that will likely be helpful.

The others have good ideas.

It is sounding like you are getting fire into the intake manifold while a valve is still open.

What type ignition is on your M? If you have converted to electronic ignition, they can screw up their timing sometimes.

The first thing I would check is the rotor button still turning? Years ago I had one do that on another make tractor and the fiber gear in
the magneto has stripped out and was loose on its shaft. So it might be a good idea to see if you can actually turn the rotor button on
the shaft (In a distribuitor you should be able to turn it a few degrees because of the mechanical advance, but it shouldn't just be
turning freely in there.)

If I prove that to not be the case then I would check the valves. Also, if a valve or valve seat suddenly becomes damaged it can do that
same thing too. I had one once with water damage from sitting and a few minutes into running a piece out of one of the valve seats.
