One man elevator question?

So I have a JLG type manlift that was on a set of dolly wheels. You could roll it around on a smooth floor. And use it to lift one man straight up to work on what ever. I removed the rolling part and have it
mounted to a block wall to lift me up to the attic in my shop. Since it was made to roll around the lift pump was run on 12V batteries. How could I convert the hydraulic drive motor to run on 120V so that I
don't need to have a battery to run it?

Why not just put a batt. tender on what Ya already have -- Call Me a tight-wad but sounds like Ya already have the batt.s anyway. If the batt.s are shot then I would consider changing it over -- Roy

We would need a lot more information before we could give you a definite answer. Do you want to change the motor to 120 VAC or do you want to use the 12 VDC motor? If you choose the existing 12 VDC motor, we would need to know the current draw of that motor to recommend a large enough power supply. If your choice is to convert to a 120 VAC motor, you will have to match the power & the RPM of the existing motor? Then there is the existing space considerations. And yet another consideration, what if you are in the attic when the power goes out? The 12 VDC would still work.
IMHO by far the simplest solution is to use the existing battery/charging system.

Tony, you may wan to read the OP again.

Since it is in your shop, can you drive your dual battery truck or tractor up to it??

The lift likely has a big honkin male and female positive/negative plug and receptacle between battery and the machine.
Just move the female side to a truck or tractor.

You can use it for jumper cables too without opening the hood if you mount it where you can get to it.

I wonder if I wouldn't just leave it at 12 volt. I doubt you use your battery charger every day so it just sits on a shelf somewhere in your shop. Make that shelf be by your man lift. Get a good new battery for the lift and since you don't use your man lift every day either just turn the charger on while you are using the lift for that 15 min or hour or what ever.

Chances are the motor is special, built into the hydraulic unit.

You would probably have to replace the entire pump/motor assembly, which will be expensive, and it would need to be carefully matched to the same volume, pressure, and safety features as what is there now to get the proper function. Also the controls would need to be on a DC power supply if they are electric.

Finding a DC power supply big enough will also be expensive. Probably a toss up which would cost the least.

As I see it, you will be money and work ahead to buy a deep cycle battery and an automatic charger if there is not already one onboard. It may have originally had multiple batteries. You should be able to get by with one since it will always be on a charger an only get intermittent use.

Get on the Hyd Surplus web site and look for 120v pumps. All you'd need to do it tie into the reservoir and hook up the right hoses. Most post lifts in auto shops use them.

Don't know how to re wire a 12vdc motor to run on 120vac.
If your batteries are still good, Buy a smart charger and leave it on the battery 24/7.

Not only complicated, You will need a special switch.
I've wired up a few AC motors used in boat lifts.
