The engine

and HST was in good shape.
It has a 17 hp Kawasaki water cooled.
I changed the HST oil, replaced wheel bearing, used Silicone to stop valve covers leaking.
Mower deck was in pieces so I used mower deck off GT275 which I can attach A-g vacuum to.
The original hood was missing. The guy used a 160 hood. I made the hood work.

Fixed front and rear tire.

All in all. I'm happy with my $200 John Deere which we use as a trim mower.
Farmall is the main mower.

I think the engine and HST will last me a lifetime.

I also put a new mower deck under my old craftsman.

I'm glad I decided I leave the tiller on my old GT275 and put the mower

deck on my $200 special.

George. Great looking mower and nice save to the scrap yard. Please explain to me what HST is as referred to on this JD mower. Thank you. Wingnut

We always used to call hydrostatic-drive machines "hydros".

Now that is so passe, the hot ''buzzword'' today is HST.

I've wondered where that started, perhaps in the advertising lingo of the Japanese ''CUTS''?

Hydro Static Transmission. HST
Both my terramites have HST s

Kubota uses electronically controlled transmission, which varies from a standard HST. The foot pedals sends an electrical signals to open and close hydraulic valves rather than directly opening and closing the valves manually. Not 100% sure if it's called an eHydro.

I have a 1996 LX188 only time it was in the shop was to fix carb ended up buying a replacement. Has mowed five acres for years still no smoke and plenty of power for a 48 deck. If you find a 48c deck that is the one that came on it.

Back in the 60 my dad bought a generic garden tractor with a
snow blade to clean the feedlot.
It has a HST. Pump on engine and torque motor on transmission.
Push the lever forward and it goes forward. Later Wheelhorse had
HST.
Call it Hydrostat or HST. It's the same thing..HST is the
acronym or abbreviation for Hydrostatic transmission.
No biggie.

'Pump on engine and torque motor on transmission.
Push the lever forward and it goes forward'

That would be hydraulic drive, not HST/hydrostatic.

Such as a Case 444 garden tractor.

This picture is of a 444 transmission, the hydraulic motor is in lower right in front of left axle.
The hydraulic pump was on the engine.
