Garden plot retirement

I have a small (1/8 acre) garden plot that, after tilling it, I've decided to retire as I've got another area for gardening. I've got some barley seed I could plant in this area and I also have some ryegrass seed. Could I plant the barley and plow it under after 10 inches tall, to help enrich the soil, and then sow the ryegrass seed? Could I also plant the two together, then harvest or mow the barley; would the ryegrass still grow? Or do I just plant the ryegrass next year? Looking for comments. Thanks

Planted barley and fescue together one year.
Cut the barley for seed and the fescue looked great and made a good pasture.
