We had a customer who ran 13 Zetor Chrystals, 10 in the fields and 3 in the workshop. I sold him a Ford 7000 for a specific job on a low bean harvester and after the season's end he put it to work on a chisel plough and four furrow plough. After a years work he came to my office and told me that all the 7000 had cost him after a year was oil and filters. He then asked what sort of a deal would he get to change the 13 Zetors for 13 7000s. I worked out the figures and put it to my governor who went through the roof because he did not want those tractors in stock.

I got over ruled and the deal did not take place. Think it was a bit shortsighted as we were in a Zetor area and they would have sold. I took in an Ursus of the same horsepower, around the 90 mark, against a Ford 6600. I got a roasting over that and got called before the managing director. The nicest thing about that was, the tractor arrived at my depot on the Friday afternoon and by the Saturday morning it had been sold at a profit.

Hi Brian in 1969 we had a wet back end and I had a customer who had a lot of potatoes to lift and we had a nice used Whitsed Super Duplex potato harvester in the yard. I did a deal with him a took a tidy Doe Triple D in part exchange for 350-00. My boss was not happy until I told him I had got it sold. I worked Newark Farm Machinery at the time and we was part of the David Brown retail group as was Eric Mathews at Beeston. I thought about you last weekend at Stradsett rally when I was doing the ring commentray as nearly all the Fordson and Ford tractors had a Wrights badge on them. MJ.

I would be the would bet he would be over the moon if you did that today, MJ. I used to lift my spuds with a Super Duplex and did a lot of design work for Key-Ag. They had a really good two row harvester towards the end of their existence which I designed and built the control system for.
At one time they were building beach cleaners for Sisis and I was involved with that project too.

Did you write an offer with no trade-in? It was not uncommon to suggest a customer sell low demand used equipment privately.
