Was using my DC last weekend and had a loud bang and then no movement. I suspected a drive chain and that's what I found.

This is the first I've actually seen of one of these failing. This tractor has always been used as a loader tractor s a lot of banging back and forth. Found the chain had several cracked links and one finally let loose.

This is clearly not the first time for this tractor as this chain has 2 connectors with a short section between. The other side has been replaced with a heavier chain. I will see if I can find one at the salvage yard today, if not new is available.

This will give me the opportunity to get all the milky oil out. I changed the oil last year, but a fair amount doesn't drain out so it still is milky. Now I'll be able to flush it and get it clean.

It's seldom metal breaks all at once,But i was surprised too how much grease and crap doesn't come out when u drain the oil in the final's !!

When it broke did it drop free so you could pull the tractor or did the chain drop in where it jambed the tractor so you could not pull it. Never any Case around to actually know hpw they are made, just knew they had a chain final drive.

Are you looking into warranty?

The old Morse Chain plant clings to the side of south hill in Ithaca, just south of me. They were
there from 1906 to 1928, then continued until 1982 as part of Borg Warner. Then it became Emerson Power Transmission. I don't know who really owned whom? But it's all history now, as the plant has been empty for over ten years.

Should be warranty, it's only been 50 years at least since anyone has been in there, should last longer than that.

I doubt it, never heard of anything and
they were not close by. This started with
the first straight engine cases in the 20s
and lasted to the last on the 6spd 930 in
67 or 68.

Hey Big Tee, can you help this guy out with some chain or at least the right stuff to use? LOL

I have never been around Case tractors at all and had no idea thats how they were set up until someone posted a pic of their broken chain here a while back. I think it was big tee and his puller. Seems like a decent design and idea. Pretty simple and straight forward. Once back together itll probably last another 60 or 70 years !

This is the first time I've ever heard of one having issues. Someone on one of the case pages said these late model DCs had the lighter chain in them. And the larger models had even bigger chains. I know the 930 I made a puller out of runs between 150 and 200 hp depending on the setup and its been doing that for 25 years with no issues.

Can happen on a Case also. Ive seen two DC housings with holes in them. Some drop clear and the tractor will roll. If it doesnt roll freely either take the back off where it sits or pick it up to move it. Tony
